Hazel is a cheerful coatl, often perceived as younger than she actually is because of her earnest excitement about most things. Her childishness was enhanced by the fact that her parents doted on her endlessly, until they ended up on opposite sides of the rift in the clan. Frustrated to tears that her family and mate don't understand the danger they're walking into, Hazel considers taking up arms to make them stay. But in the end, she can't bring herself to fight her own mate, and watches them leave.

The only friend who stays behind is Siglinde, an abandoned hatchling that Hazel's parents had been looking after. Brought together by the family they share, the two dragons often spin stories of another timeline: one where they're all together still. And while Hazel maintains a bright and bubbly facade during the day, it is only during these nighttime whispers that her laugh rings true.

In the end, even this small pleasure cannot last.
