His stand embellished by ornaments of each kind, from streamers to puppets dancing in the moonlight and in the center of all - lanterns, of course. Their shine is the brightest, as if the candles places inside are living their own life, as if someone ignited them not only with a flame, but with a soul whose will to live is so great that it burns in its own. Tsukimi’s stall is organized carefully, for the only thing he values more than the lampions he sells is order and tidiness. Even if his display is one of the most spectacular, filled with trinkets as colorful as the silks Tsukimi wears, the arrangement is thoughtful and everything has its place. Dolls on the right, medallions hanging from the above, from smallest to biggest, a plate of mooncakes set on the separate table to avoid dirtying the novelties and the lanterns themselves sorted by color. The stand was one of the most recognizable among all, but potential customers know they have to hurry, for they know Tsukimi and his goods will be gone in a blink of an eye. And those who reach Tsukimi on time are often surprised by the payment he asks. “A seedling.” “A piece of coal.” “Feather.” Here no coin nor gem had a value and what for many hold no worth to Tsukimi was enough to trade one of the gorgeous lanterns. No one questioned that strange method of payment, for the skydancer seemed to be content with whatever he earned. The faster the clock tickled, the closer it was to midnight, the more light candles placed inside the lampions produced until they were brighter than the starts themselves. And as every light was about to be set high to the sky, Tsukimi and his stall were long gone, vanishing amidst the embrace of darkness. ________________________________________ |

However, it didn’t stop the rumors from spreading. Some dragons were sure Tsukimi is nothing but a ghost. And they weren’t wrong. During the midnight, Tsukimi’s figure hovered over the kingdom, situated high where the view on the sky is the clearest. A mountain’s peak, abandoned tower, wide and empty glade - each place was good as long as no eye would spy him and the view with no flaws. Tsukimi’s gaze fixes upwards when the show begins. Where the mortal’s eyes would see a giant wave of colorful lanterns hovering, exploring the night sky, Tsukimi sees lost souls, dancing and knocking on the heaven’s doors. He recognizes those who he gave away. For a seedling, for the one who always starved. For a chunk of coal, for the soul which sought for warmth. And for a feather, for the dragon who always wished to fly, but their wings would never lift them up. A simple trade to fulfil a soul’s last wish. If he could, Tsukimi would free them all by himself. If only his own heart wasn’t a spectrum, a mere memory of who he used to be in the past. He was stuck between the living and dead, but agreed to that terrible fate long time ago. Instead of existing with no purpose and travelling with a lack of destination, he tasked himself with something only he could do. If Tsukimi wasn’t able to leave this world for good, he’ll make sure no other soul shall join him in his tale. ________________________________________ |
