B I O G R A P H Y

"I was young once," the Banescale growled quietly, his gaze distant. "Foolish. We had the world at our clawtips, Astrophel and I." He chuckled, a raspy, grinding sound that stung like claws scraping on slate. "The Gift blesses only a select few. While many can travel through time without even knowing it, very few are able to control the ability completely from a young age. It's a form of magic that still evades even the most clever of scholars. Astrophel and I, however... we both had the Gift. We could hop through time like two idiots in love, spinning the world around our own axis. He... was my angel."

He seemed to fall even deeper into memory, his expression hardening with the pain that came with the past. He didn't speak for a few moments, and it was as if the whole world stilled, forgot to breathe.

"He's dead now." The words hit heavy, scraping a crater into the hearts of all that heard his words. "But surely... you've seen him around the circus, have you not? The odd coatl that stares from the shadows. Silent, always there when you least expect it? That's him. That's Astrophel... My Astrophel."

He sighed, his tail whipping over the barren circus grounds. "Barnaby has kept him alive in exchange for my... services. See, over the years, I've learned a little more than just time travel. Consider me a living reaper, if you will. A collector of the rare and the unique, the wandering souls with no better place to go. I provide the souls, and Barnaby keeps Astrophel around. It's a good deal, really."

Even as he said this, it seemed rather hard to believe, thanks to the pain that ravaged his expression. It was clear he wanted more than the hollow being that Astrophel had become. He wanted his friend back, his lover, and he was willing to do anything to get him. He was the most dangerous sort of dragon, it seemed. The kind with nothing to lose when the sun sets.

B I O G R A P H Y

Raven is often the first figure that many new faces at the circus will meet. With his grizzled appearance and almost predatory stare, he's scared away many a customer before, but his services are valuable enough that the sacrifices in ticket sales are tolerated.

In short, Raven is the one tasked with gathering most of the new performers at the circus, as Barnaby has never found someone quite as skilled as him at collecting the souls and skeletons of the dead. While no one joins the circus without the permission of Barnaby, Raven still holds a bit of sway, as he's grown to be trusted over the years.

However, he most definitely has ulterior motives. Anyone that gets to know him well enough will see quite easily that he only cares about one thing: the well-being of his deceased lover, Astrophel. He's desperate to return to his glory days, and so far, Barnaby is the closest he's been able to get to reviving Astrophel.

Even after all these years practically alone, he hasn't given up. Perhaps one day, he'll finally find the answers he's looking for, but it's doubtful that they reside at this circus.
