 A pair of rather disgruntled looking dragons approached a gaudy, bright pink booth decorated with the words "Love Tester", as well as a multitude of hearts and roses. One of them was muttering about the disturbing puppet show they had just witnessed, clearly unpleased, but stopped as their partner tugged them over to the booth, pausing to read the sign. "Hmph. Hopefully this will be better, at least," they muttered, and on cue, the dragon within the booth leaned forward and tapped on a small sign that sat on top of the booth. LOVE READINGS ARE DONATION ONLY; IF YOU ARE DISSATISFIED WITH YOUR RESULTS, YOU GET YOUR READING FREE. "Want to give it a go?" he asked the two, his expression unreadable. After a moment's discussion, they agreed, and the lights that decorated the booth lit up in a flashing pattern, a cheerful tune accompanying them. Quick as a whip, Averill's paws grasped the wrists of the two dragons, seeking out their pulse. He blinked slowly, and when his eyes reopened, they seemed... different somehow. Had they always been red? It didn't matter. As he spoke, all other thoughts faded into a swirl of twinkling lights and circus music.

"You've been enjoying your time here, haven't you? That puppet show was certainly a work of art, and it seems that things will only get better as the evening progresses, wouldn't you agree?" At the slow nods from the two dragons, he continued. "Your compatibility rating is... 76 percent!" he announced, just as a small display on the booth flashed the same number.
Averill let go of their wrists and gave them a small round of applause, his eyes glinting. "That's quite impressive, you know! Many couples are lucky to get even over a 50, so it seems you two know yourselves quite well." The dragon that had been grumbling earlier smiled widely at Averill and placed a rather generous tip in Averill's tip jar. "You are absolutely right! Thank you for this amazing test," they cooed, practically starry eyed. Averill snorted, waving his paw nonchalantly. "It's just what I do, but thank you for the tip. Carry on now, you two. I think you have some more sights to see." And indeed they did. As they wandered off, one of them suggested watching the puppet show again.

Averill occupies quite the unique position at the circus. Though to guests he simply appears as the one who runs the small entertainment booth known as the "Love Tester", a compatibility rater for couples, he is also the boyfriend of the circus's owner, Barnaby. While they keep their private life rather, well, private, it is still clear to any other member of the circus that Barnaby trusts Averill above anyone else.
Not much is known about the two of them except that they seem to have known each other for a long time and tend to have incredibly long meetings after every performance, often stretching into early hours of the mornings. No one asks what they are about, but they appear to be rather serious. Raven has speculated that they are likely about the patrons of the night, as well as the performances. Averill is known for his wit and mysterious nature. To even make him unwillingly break a smile is considered a miracle. To know what he is thinking at any given time is near impossible. For being an expert in love, he certainly does not seem willing to share his emotions. Perhaps this is different with Barnaby, but no one ever asks. Exactly the extent of Averill's sway in decisions at the circus is unknown to all but him and Barnaby. It is likely an amount greater than zero. Barnaby will always be in charge, however. Averill has no desire for true leadership. He is afraid of losing himself within the show. His fears have not yet proven to be founded in reality, but as he is fond of saying, nothing in the circus likes to follow the rules of reality.
