Biography

KOKUTO
astronomer

╭━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━╮

* He wakes up suddenly in the middle of the night. He closes his eyes again and lies in his bed for a few moments, before he sighs, and the floor creaks under his unsteady steps. The kettle takes some time to boil, and he stands there impatiently, the floor uncomfortably cold as its chill seeps into the soles of his feet. He shivers, and looks out through the balcony's windows.

The view offers no warmth, but at least it is welcome to the astronomer - for once it is clear on the coast of the Shifting Expanse, and the stars shine brightly in the absence of both the clouds and moon. He smiles at this as the kettle clicks off, and, staring at it for a moment, he makes up his mind, leaving the water within to cool as he searches his flat for his battered telescope. It is old, and largely unnecessary in his field of radio astronomy, but it unfolds readily enough with a bit of persuasion. He carries it and a fresh cup of tea onto the balcony, and makes himself comfortable as he stares through the eyepiece, and up into the night sky.

******** The cup, still a quarter full, is icy now. But the horizon shows no sign of oncoming light, and this he counts as enough reason to stay there, pressed up against his telescope in a hunch that'll likely hurt when he leaves it. Not that it matters to him in this moment - it is so rare for the skies here to completely clear, so he'll take what he can. At first, he just names the stars that he had recently been studying, then those that compose major constellations, then those that were his favorite to find in the night sky as a child. Now he just stares contentedly as he scans the sky, unsure of what he is looking for.

He blinks. Something was off for a moment there. He looks through the telescope again, perplexedly trying to find what he had seen for the better part of a minute. There. A star should be there, in that strange empty space in the middle of the constellation he could swear he had known for years. And as he angles the telescope slightly, he quickly realizes the constellation isn't there at all, its form twisted into something other. The telescope swings wildly now, as he slowly begins to accept the stars above are not the ones he knows, finally wrenching his gaze from the eye piece. The sun should've risen by now. The campus should be starting to wake for the day. But the grounds beneath are silent, the lights that should've stayed on through the night are gone, and the night sky starts to press down on him with a darkness exacerbated by the absence of the moon's light.

He has never been afraid of the dark, he thinks numbly. Not until now. And that fear feeds on every hasty rationalization he tries to make about what is happening here, each theory more absurd than the last. He stares at those unfamiliar stars as his thoughts unravel.

And as he panics, he falls.

It does not feel like falling, as he is consumed by the glowing stars that he should be looking up at, had been looking up at, rather than falling towards them. He had been standing on the observatory's balcony, and now he is not, hurtling not towards the ground but towards a sky that seems equally as solid and as final. And despite all the impossibilities, his thoughts do not race to conclusions he cannot grasp, nor do they accelerate at all; the panic has slipped away somewhere where he cannot follow, and he is perfectly calm as he pitches upwards into the abyss.

The stars burn him. That much he is sure of, and yet he cannot find it within himself to scream or draw away; instead, he watches, as they make his scales glow and splinter without smoke, or scent, or pain. All he can do is see himself in this silent, unfeeling place, see the cosmos unfurling in front of him, for him, into him, see himself become a part of the stars so unfamiliar to those he had only glimpsed at from that miniature planet. They say he must burn with them. So he does.

He wakes up suddenly in the middle of the night. He lies there for a few moments, feeling too awake for having woken up so suddenly, before he sighs, and the floor creaks under his unsteady steps. The kettle takes some time to boil, and he stands there impatiently. In those minutes, the cold of the tiles and of the night air doesn't even cross his mind. The kettle clicks. He pours himself a cup of tea, glances fondly at the view outside his windows, filled with stars whose familiarity and resulting relief confuse him for a moment. Shrugging, he chalks it up to remnants of a bad dream he cannot remember. He heads back to bed. And as he falls asleep, he does not notice that his scales glow softly, bright with the same luminosity as the distant stars outside his window.

really good animation by stanley!

lore notes:
- so it turns out that the neighbors' abuse of light magic has extremely unfortunate side effects
- tl;dr his dreams of unreality often act as subconscious attempts to comprehend his shift in elemental alignment and the functional overdose of light required for it, caused by the direct divine influence instilled in the mechanic living next door
