"Listen to the whispering trees, they sing songs and recite poetry. All telling you to get out, thanks."
⚔ STORY
There are places in this world where the fabric of reality is but a gossamer veil, that which is tangible becomes ethereal and all things certain become whimsy. A veil that hides pocket spaces, areas connected to Sornieth but held separate, perhaps to protect those within. To anyone who lives in the Canyon, it's frightfully obvious that this is one such liminal space. It's why you can fly over the canyon from above and see the beach, the woods, the sand, but you can only enter from the docks; attempt to land anywhere else and the entire Reliquary seems to fade from existence. It's why the lair seems much bigger when you're in it than it does from the outside. It's why you're not supposed to leave the docks: they're the only place that's really, properly, connected to the realm of the physical. To walk into the deserts south of the lair is to disappear forever into sand. Sidhe comes from another such liminal space. But hers was... ruptured. In the Tangled Woods there are rings of mushrooms used as doorways, an anchor of sorts between two places, and through these doors, one can step from this world into... different places. Places, perhaps, where the trees have voices, where magic flickers through the air like shimmering heat haze, where there is an eternal ambient light coming from nowhere and everywhere all at once. Or perhaps a place of living nightmares, dark and dripping and cold, shrouded in fog and filled with unnatural yowling of unseen revellers. Places, even, where time seems never to have passed and now it's trapped in a sepia antiquity, those who call it home speak in unusual dialects and are unlike any creature you've ever seen. All of these places were born of necessity, they are home to those who would find the rest of Sornieth... inhospitable. But they are fragile. Destroy their doorway, and everyone in it ceases to exist. When Sidhe was little, her home caught fire. She was too young to remember the details, but the music was silenced and replaced with screams, the once softly magic air became sharp and impossible to breathe without her lungs bleeding. When the mushrooms burned, their pocket space was torn; no longer kept safe from the trials of wider Sornieth, she - and many others who fled (or in her case, were shoved through by terrified parents) - were left homeless. There's nothing familiar here. Yes, there are trees, but they do not speak to her. Yes, there is soft grass and small, squishy mushrooms... but they have no souls. Yes, there are others like her, but she watched as the lights went from their eyes and they returned - one by one - to the earth they so desperately craved a greater connection with. Driven by her youthful fear and clinging to the impossible belief that somewhere out there was someone just like her, Sidhe wandered. She wandered until she found another liminal space. A funny little pocket dimension like hers... but not. The Canyon doesn't look like her home did, there are no dragons here like the druids she grew up with, there is less music, less of the shimmering magic in the air, the trees still don't speak. But it smells like home. It feels the way she remembers. And that alone was enough to drop her to her knees and weep. It's not the home she remembers. But the dragons here give her reason to keep going, to make a new home out of this strangeness. And the trees are enough. She has something to tend to, once more. ⚔ OTHER
