Vekha’s earliest memories of rough, windblown travel through the desert. In these faded snapshots, he’s tucked up against much larger chest and swaddled tightly to protect him from the pelting sand. He remembers the sway of his caretaker’s gait and the feeling of being protected.

He had been found as an egg, but raised like any other of the hatchlings. His childhood was spent as part of the wild pack of hatchlings that seemed to belong to all the adults communally. Despite the harshness of their existence, Vekha, like most young dragons, was oblivious to how closely the clan toed the line between survival and destruction.

The danger became brutally clear when he was on the cusp of adulthood. During a heavy rain, raiders snuck up on their camp and he watched his entire life turn to ash. Luckily, the raiders were more interested in their supplies, and he was able to flee into the desert.

He looked for them, of course. Surely, some of the other were able to get away as well. Maybe not the adults, but the younger ones, like him, that the raiders ignored. He traveled around the area, looking in on other clans and asking for help. But as days bled to weeks and then to months, he gradually lost hope of finding them here. His clan was nomadic. Clearly, they’d moved. He needed to look further afield.

“I like trains. I like their rhythm, and I like the freedom of being suspended between two places,
all anxieties of purpose taken care of: for this moment I know where I am going."

Stormseeker Rails: with it he could travel all over the expanse. He could cover far more ground than travelling on his own. He wasn’t smart enough to be an engineer or a conductor, but surely they needed other sorts of help. He started at the bottom, just doing whatever job would get him aboard. At every station, he’d take time to ask about his missing family.

But as time moved on and he found no trace, the initial fervor of the search dimmed to be just another part of his life. Gradually, his lost family took up less and less space in his thoughts, which were now filled with shipping manifests and timetables. The job he originally took as a means to an end, became the pillar of his life. He loved traveling the Expanse, making new friends or meeting up with old ones across many settlements. He loved to wake up in the mornings and see the brilliant flash of sun across the underbelly of storm before it rose out of sight. He’d like to see the sunrise from as many places as possible before he grows too old to travel.

What’s more, he was actually pretty good at the work. He’d always been rather direct, and the pressure of timetables honed that tendency into borderline rudeness. He doesn’t mean anything by it. He’s got a lot to do in a short amount of time, and watching his tone or being careful to not overstep on his requests just doesn’t register when he’s in the middle of a task. *

There are so many exciting things to see, people to meet, and stories to hear. Vekha feels incredibly lucky that he get more of a chance than most to travel and find such things. The stress of the job is more than worth the opportunities it provides. It always has been, but now he’s pursuing it for himself rather than the people that he’s lost.

*This tendency has made quite a few people mad. Most get over it pretty quick, but the Spire maintenance crew developed a bit of a grudge against him since they had to deal with him more than most. They are the one responsible for his pocketmouse-related trauma. Vekha has no idea what they did to make them bite so much.
