Distanced and mistrusting, Zachariah (or, as his few friends call him, Zach), is something of a mindful watcher for the clan. He’s an old prison guard from the Icefields turned hunter, who possesses the innate ability to detect the pheromones around him and use them to sense the presence of the Shade in those infested - no matter how big or small that infestation may be. In his prime, he deciphered friend from foe easily, striking them down without mercy or hesitation - even if the enemy before him had once been a trusted ally. He’d once used this ability sparingly, using it only to determine what he already suspected, but, as time went on, Zachariah’s overuse of the ability meant he began to become increasingly paranoid. Eventually, those he surrounded himself with began to question Zachariah’s loyalty, making remarks that were meant to hurt and discrediting his abilities at any given moment. They said he was the enemy now, so lost in his abilities that he’d turned even on himself. Their cries of disloyalty were so loud that, when Zach saw the Shade lingering on his fellow guards, it was already too late. No one heard his claims for much more than the paranoid ramblings of an aging warrior, and by the time it was made apparent, there was no one left to see that he’d been right all along.

Zachariah became something of a vigilante in the years after, seeking out those tainted by the Shade and dispatching of them with cruel, calculated efficiency. For years he wandered alone, until he made his way to the Tangled Wood, and was eventually found by Shal’anir’s patrolling guards half dead and literally clawing his way through the underbrush. He was immediately taken to the healers and was a pitiful sight to see; armour loose and ill-fitting on his starving frame, a brutal cut over one eye, and a shattered left horn from, presumably, the same blow. His wings were torn, and there was a deep knife wound between his ribs, which had been expertly slipped in just between the guardian’s natural plating and situated millimetres from his lungs. The blade had been saturated in poison and, although Zach had removed it shortly after the initial blow, it was already too late. Poison sluggishly moved through his veins with each heartbeat, threatening to kill him before the next full moon.

The healers had just been able to bring the old guardian back from the brink and, for days on end, he’d drifted in and out of consciousness, never quite aware enough to ask questions or understand any answers given. He does, however, remember seeing a few faces that were almost constantly by his side during his recovery. The first was a large nocturne named Korven, who would often go to sit with the guardian. During his time, the other had caught wind of who Zachariah was, and believed that, at some point, they had been stationed at the same outpost together. The second was a rather flighty skydancer who, seeing that Korven trusted the guardian, had decided to investigate. He’d watched Zachariah with distrustful curiosity, putting the pieces together and connecting the dots without the guardian having to say a word, which was something the injured dragon had greatly appreciated. The two became close friends in particular, although an odd pair indeed, and, as Zachariah recovered, it was, in part, due to the two dragons who’d regularly visited him that he decided to stay at Shal’anir.

Another reason for Zachariah staying also came from the presence of Vizier, the queen’s personal alchemist, who was quickly rising in power and influence. The guardian could feel the taint that was growing beneath Shal’anir, lazily moving through her roots and making its way to the surface, but there was something in particular about the alchemist that drew his eye and, as he recovered, he began to watch the other with particular scrutiny. There was something about the queen’s alchemist that didn’t look right to Zach, and his instincts had never been wrong before. His outline was blurred, looking as if he were moving just a bit beyond what the old guardian’s eyes could keep up with, and the skydancer had a strange intensity in his eyes whenever he looked at Zach - as if he knew something he shouldn’t. If the queen was alarmed by Zach’s keen interest in one of her chosen, she held her tongue, and instead remains neutral on the matter entirely.

Once fully recovered, Zachariah was given a permanent place to stay within Shal’anir, for it seemed the shaded behemoth herself had taken quite a liking to the newcomer. Most often, Zachariah can’t be found at Shal’anir, as he’s often off scouting, but will sometimes be spotted with Korven or Luciel with his guard up and gaze attentive to all around him. He’s an ice dragon through and through, possessing a stern outlook on life and a cruel, bitter edge to his personality that’s off-putting to most around him. It’s as if he’s always on duty, forever watching everything and everyone around him, and this intensity always increases tenfold whenever the queen’s alchemist or any newcomer is in the same area as he is. To anyone watching, there’s no doubt that Zachariah has a job to do, a duty to uphold, and was raised from birth to be made specifically for that purpose. He will not fail, nor will he allow anyone to get in the way, no matter the cost.

APPEARANCE
One of the largest guardians within Shal'anir, Zach has rough, but not unkempt, scales that gives him a rugged, harsh appearance. His expression is often as cold as he is, with a heavy-set face and dark scars littering his body. Beneath the layers of heavy armour, it's undeniable that Zach is a fighter. Even with the poisoned blade that once pierced his hide having weakened him greatly, he can, and will, hold his own to a frightening degree. His left horn is cracked and broken halfway down, although he cannot remember exactly when this happened.

PRESENCE
Zach is often seen around Vizier on account of keeping almost constant tabs on him. he doesn't speak to the alchemist, however, nor really to anyone. He just watches with an undecipherable, terrifying look in his eye. On the rare occasions he's seen away from the alchemist, he's not particularly friendly. Perhaps owing to his large size, Zach often looks down on other dragons as he passes them in the halls; silent, distant, and as a stranger. He either hasn't realised, or doesn't care, that he presents himself this way.

SEEKER ABILITY
The ability he is known for is something Zach doesn't care to explain - not that he can. While some presume it's just a 'hunch' that the guardian gets, Zach does, in fact, actually see corruption. It often manifests itself in a dark smoke or fog, slowly obscuring the dragon and infesting their surroundings. For dragons too far gone, Zach cannot even make out who the individual is, as the taint completely consumes them and leaves nothing more than a hollow, black mass in their place. This part he considers a blessing. No reason for hesitation when he cuts them down.

» Notes «

━━━━━━━━━━

- Can often be seen watching Vizier with a particularly cruel look in his eye, and really doesn’t hold any liking for him
- Plagued with nightmares of all he knows being consumed by the Shade, often worried that maybe he is becoming the enemy. Tends to scoff it off
- Passed a gaoler once, who attacked him whilst screaming that Zach was tainted by teh Shade. Although Zach beat the other off and scared him away with his tail between his legs, the sheer terror in the gaoler’s eyes still hasn’t been forgotten by Zach
- Very good at tracking, uses those pheromones
- Knows of Krysteena, who he taught once before. She hunts the Shade as readily as he does; eventually realises that he is one of her targets now
- Speaks like he’s from the wild west. No one really knows where the accent comes from
- Loves Korven
