Biography
EREBUS FIRE ROLE: architect RELATIONS: none RANK: elite |
THE EMBER
wry | blunt | cynical ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ It feels like a lifetime. You tell me better days are just around the next corner - I’m running in circles; there’s nothing but corners here. In all corners of the world, there’s at least one clan that has once had Erebus in its ranks. The firewalkers in the deep lava pools, where he grew up an age ago; the smelters where he worked once he came of age; explorers in the Hewn City who had welcomed him when he needed to shake the monotony of life. It didn’t work for him either. He was a dragon born of flame, whose inner fire had burnt out into embers long ago - and what place is there in Sornieth for a dragon like that? For an age, Erebus was lost. He traded, fought, and flew over the world on the backs of giants. One of them brought him to the Seedscar, where a voice called to the emptiness inside him. He followed. The Karian caverns then were huge, but devoid of life outside the small band of dragons that sought refuge there. They had work for him - and so he worked. There were a hundred tunnels and passageways in the complex. Tens of dozens of them were caved in, many more narrowed out too small for even a hatchling to fit, some simply led to nowhere. It was mindless, monotonous labour, and he spent days alone in the winding passages, lighting them with his flame. It wasn’t that he had any investment in its end, or that he wanted to stay. It simply made no difference to him where he was, and he suspected that perhaps, that was what the Keeper saw, and sought to use. That didn’t matter to him either. Being in the tunnels alone took the pressure off his mind, in a way. Not knowing the turn of the days meant no more reminders that he was wasting them; not seeing another living soul meant he did not need to think about how he was using up his. And the fires grew in the dark. Now, passages once black and grey are warmed by flame and flora. Glowing mushrooms and bioluminescent creatures light the tunnels and caverns less frequented, and fire completes the rest. Erebus found himself again surrounded by the colours and life he had subconsciously tried to escape many moons ago. But this time was different. The world here was one he had helped to build, and he saw his touch in the tunnels once narrow, and the orbs of fire lighting the dark. He couldn’t remember anymore the last time his days felt pointless. Maybe the Keeper knew more than he'd thought, after all. |
