a forgotten king

this sharpness and pride had once served him well, it had made him brave... well, it had given him a shield of armour to match his physical red and silver battle gear he wore into battle. young king, warrior. father left him the crown, but he had started wars he didn't finish and made enemies who are still out for blood, no matter that a new king has been crowned.

like how a captain never leaves a sinking ship first, a general never leaves his soldiers behind. a king never abandons his kingdom. his resolve to fight till his last breath almost matched his grief that so many of his people were about to die. if he was going to go, it would be in a final blaze of glory, and he would take down as many of those hateful cowards down with him as he could. if he were to fall, let it be that he is buried in the ground of his home, where he belonged. but fate is cruel, and in a last act of defiance and love, his second in command flung him off the cliff where their last battle was going to take place, puncturing his wings so that he couldn't fly back up. "live. live on for us." when reverence came to on the icy hills, he realised that he, alone, would have to live on for his kingdom.

a crown is v impt in his lore but i don't have proper crowns beyond flower crowns... so... fillet and some roses will suffice dear fancy king

a lil bit of fun from the event

a forgotten king, of a forgotten kingdom. is this all he'll ever be?

this sharpness and pride had once served him well, it had once made him brave, it has once made him one of the fiercest young generals. but the guilt has turned him bitter, the grief has made him cold. being on this icy hill brings back memories of the worst day of his life, the day his kingdom lost the battle that would end them all, the day his second in command flung him off an icy cliff so that he wouldn't be able to fight in a battle he knew he wasn't going to walk away alive from. he never meant to lose his kingdom, the place he loved with all his heart and swore to protect with his life. but the shoes he had to fill were too big and dark, filled with wars he never started and battles he never meant to fight.

and somehow, all of a sudden, here he is, climbing this crazy mountain in an empty pursuit of glory (really, how glorious can you get when you've let your kingdom get massacred). he was angry, and cruel, and took it out on pitiful dragons because he hated the way their eyes shined in excitement, the way they could laugh and the way they seemed so carefree and young and untainted. but as he travelled in the bitter cold, things started to become clearer. in the silent aloneness, grief had no where to hide. no anger, no annoyance, no mindless cruel sabotages. grief was grief, and at the end of the day, he still has himself to answer to.

reverence steadily plowed forward, sensing the summit was near. he hears a call from his new travel partner, and turns to see her deathly pale from the cold, and hopelessly out of breath. instinct almost drew out a scoff and a careless turn away from this tired pearlcatcher. weak, weak thing. careless and weak. he was just about to take his first step away when a sudden, desperate thought struck him. what are you doing? since when have you become so cruel? "never leave your kingdom behind." his ancestors, as horrible and cold as they were, still had enough good in them to uphold this; they were honourable people at least. you never abandon your kingdom. you never leave your soldiers. it was something he had ingrained into his mind, a promise to protect and serve, and yet, he was just about to walk away from this helpless dragon hunched in the snow. disgust and confusion and pity and sadness and a whole plethora of emotions (so many that the only one he settled on in the end was confusion) struck him, and in his daze, he did the one thing he still has committed to muscle memory. the one gesture he has done time and again while leading battles and carrying injured dragons off the field. he offers her a shoulder.

after a short hike, they reach the summit.

the view was breathtaking. the wilderness sprawled beneath his feet reminded him of a time from long ago, a time where he could stand on another icy mountain half a world away and joke about how everything from there to as far as the eye can see was his. the taste in his mouth was bitter as he realised that this is a different mountain, in a different time.

carmeline tapped on his shoulder and offered him a small scrap of paper. he squinted at it, before realising that it was him! how strange to be carrying a polaroid camera along on a competition up an icy mountain of death... but he appreciated it. after keeping the polaroid safely in his bag, he surveyed the dragons gathered around on the summit. so few of them were left, and the ones who are looked so tired. but he saw the looks on their faces as they took in the view and the beautiful flowers around them. they looked so happy! as if everything that has happened still haunts them, but yet they find this little bit of peace and beauty and still have it in them to be happy.

soon, he prepares for the journey back down. his travelling buddy (honestly, since when did they reach this common consensus that they were going to travel together this point on? whatever this unspoken agreement is, he found himself somehow a little glad that she was still here) led the way, seemingly reenergised from being on the summit. a certain quietness settles around him, but it's cut by a soft voice. "I don’t know what you’re going through," he looks up sharply, "but if you ever need to talk about it… I wouldn’t mind listening." it was silent for a moment, before the sound of footsteps restart as they continue onward. but in that moment, something in him realised that perhaps, she understands. perhaps they really are not so different after all.

he always hated how no matter what happens, the world just continues on. the sun comes up then down and the moon shows up and the sun comes up again and it repeats and repeats and everyone just goes on. but right now, he is glad that the world continues on. maybe that means that one day, he can too.
