Joining the Band of Renegades (Part 1)
“Well well well, what have we here?” You look up from the meager puddle called a watering hole to see a rather intimidating Banescale staring down at you. Their vibrant mulberry scales gleam in the sunlight, giving them an almost ethereal glow. “You seem lost. Missing a sense of purpose.”

How did they know that!? You wonder, jaw snapping open.

“Close your mouth, you’ll let the flies in. And trust me, that’s the last thing you want to happen.”

You do as you’re told, too shocked to think.

“Dia, I think you’ve scared the poor dear.” A silver nocturne approaches, eyes full of sympathy. She turns to you. “What they mean, is that you appear to have nowhere to go.”

You hang your head in shame, not knowing how to respond.

“Raise your head. I’ll have no self-depreciation on my watch.” The Banescale snaps.

“Dia-”

“Relax, Cirrus, I’ve got it handled.”

“...If you’re sure. I’ll go supervise the new apprentices, make sure nothing malfunctions.”

The nocturne heads back the way she came, leaving you alone with the terrifying dragon.

“I’m sure you’ve heard of the name ‘Storm Striker’, so I’ll cut to the chase.” They bend their head, staring you directly in the eyes.

THIS is the infamous Storm Striker!? Oh great deities help me…

“I can see the fear in your eyes,” they sigh. “There’s no need to be afraid, you’ve not made me angry. I simply wish to know if you’ve lost your way.”

“Lost my way?” you ask timidly.

“Correct. Perhaps you are an exile, a criminal, cast out from your clan. Or maybe you’ve lost all sense of purpose in life and need a fresh start.”

“Why do you ask?”

They pause, eyeing you from head to toe. “Its my business to guide those who are lost. Help them to find what they seek. My clan has earned quite the reputation as a safe haven for criminals, scum, and villains alike, though not without penance.”

PENANCE!?!? This is getting scarier by the minute!

“Not like that, you worrywart. There’s plenty of work to be done, mouths to feed, the injured and sick to care for, and Lost Ones to find and save. In return for sanctuary and guidance, a dragon must pay their dues in labor suited to their skillset.”

“Why are you telling me this? What’s the point?”

“Because I see you are lost. You are drifting aimlessly. I am merely extending an offer of guidance and sanctuary until you have found your way again. Whether you accept or not is up to you. I’ll give you a few moments to consider.”

They stalk off to the other side of the puddle and fill their canteen. As they do, you begin to ponder. What if I joined? Would I be able to find my way? Would the infamous Storm Striker be able to help me?

You make eye contact with them from across the watering hole. They raise their head.

“Well? Have you made your decision?”

You take a few deep breaths, nerves in full force. I might die, I might be being tricked into being whisked away for whatever reason. But at this point, what do I have to lose?

“...I’m in.”

A devious smirk appears on their face, and a sense of dread washes over you.

“Wonderful! Now come with me, and I’ll introduce you to my Band of Renegades.”
