Clan Qæia

DRAGON SPECIES CHANGES:
Because it is my little digital pets and I can do whatever I want to, none of the in game/lore sizing ratios between species apply. This is subject to change as new breeds are released.
Here are the ways I visualize each species for myself:

Veilspun are unfathomably large. 4-5X larger than any other breed.
Guardians, Ridgebacks, Skydancers, are all the same size and are the largest.
Snappers, Imperials, are the next largest.
Spirals, Bogsneak, Gaolers, Undertides, are "medium sized".
Coatls, Wildclaws, Nocturnes, are "mid-size".
Fae, Pearlcatchers are the smallest. But compared to in-game brackets, would be closer in size to canon Skydancer size.
*insert here sizing comparison drawing I will never make*
ALSO All of the dragons within this Clan are both air & underwater breathers. They are true underwater breathers with gills, and do not rely on holding their breath for periods of time. Making the switch between either breathing method is instantaneous and instinctual.

Hatchery

The Hatchery Attendant is a highly honoured and respected role within the Clan. It is one of the most important roles.
The hatchery is located deep within a trench off the main coastline of their island system. Its exact location is unknown to the common citizen. Only hatchery attendants know this information. Mothers learn when they are ready to lay a clutch, but are sworn to secrecy.
Each "nest" is located within an underground cave system within the surrounding rock & coral beds within these trenches. Due to time, erosion, rock formation and hydrothermal vents over the millions of years it took the trench to form, there is a system of little pockets and holes or "caves" within this rockface. Most are too small for even a dragon to fit through but some are large and cavernous. Some of these caves still have hydrothermal vents pumping constant streams of mineral rich hot water through them. It is here that the hatchery attendants make their nests and oversee the cutches of eggs & hatchlings.
EGGS
When a mother is ready to lay her clutch, she enters a period of observance by the hatchery attendants. She is fed a special diet for two days, and is monitored for any signs of distress or complicated birth. If she has been deemed healthy, she is allowed to come and choose a nest. Typically a mother lays her clutch and leaves to rejoin the Clan and enter another two day observance period for health monitoring. However, some mothers elect to care for their eggs on their own. There is a special ceremony surrounding this [SEE: Religion/Ceremonies].
When a clutch is laid, a single hatchery attendant is assigned to it. They never once leave the side of the eggs. The eggs are monitored for temperature, are rotated on a schedule, are kept clean from algae and barnacles or other pests, and generally looked after. This hatchery attendant goes into a hibernation-esque period, needing only to eat once before they begin their duty.
Hatchery attendants are allowed to be any citizen of the Clan that shows themselves capable of this task, however those that are interested more often than not share certain evolutionary advantages. The typical hatchery attendant has a better sense of space and movement while underwater, as well as being able to smell/taste the water for greater distances. This makes them extremely agile and cautious within the cave system; while other dragons may become disoriented. Hatchery attendants are also able to sense danger very early. These attendants fight to their deaths to protect a clutch from any form of harm.
Physical description: Qæia eggs are different from their average water counterpart. Due to the nature of their rearing, these eggs are thinner and softer. The outside has a steely, stonewash blue colour and a bumpy textured shape. The eggs are all different shapes when laid. (imagine a cracked egg floating underwater, and how it undulates and moves with the flow of water creating lumpy organic blobs) As the egg ages during incubation, the outer layer begins to harden and smooth to a more uniform oval. It begins to take on a pearlescent sheen that continues to get shiner until the egg hatches.
Because these eggs are more susceptible to environmental factors, they make for easy food targets for other animals. The broken shell is also highly coveted in surrounding areas as being a "superior" rare pearl and is constantly being hunted after by poachers and thieves. This shell debris is collected by hatchery attendants and returned to the Clan. It holds significant spiritual and social value [SEE: Religion/Ceremonies].

HATCHLINGS--

Currency

Active currencies used in this Clan are: pearls, cowrie shells, olive snail shells, gemstones, precious metals & ores, festival currencies, foreign food items, ...etc. listed in descending order of value.
Treasure and Gems are accepted but are frowned upon. The Clan keeps enough around to help with currency conversion for passing travelers or markets & festivals, but no more than needed. Localized currencies are heavily preferred and the Clan does not use T/G internally. Because the Clan works on its own currency system, conversion rates to T/G are constantly changing.
Currencies used locally by the Clan are capped at naturally occurring items. For an example, crude ore or metals will be valued a lot higher than a broken sword or technology. Things that have had no outside influence to the nature of their existence are what is desired. Say for example bones were used as a currency. The more and more the bones become valuable, the more that will be needed to uphold the economy. The next step might be splitting the bone into smaller pieces to gain more value per piece. However, it is this exact mindset that the Clan forbade. Currency that is being specifically made for the sole purpose of being currency is seen as a fallacy of their beliefs and social structure.
