Bee, Part 1
???
~
All he could feel was the cold surrounding him.
It was the cold that numbed his entire mind and body. Did he really feel it? Was he only dreaming? All he felt was cold, and he couldn't move. He felt as if he were drifting away from his own wings. Was he dying after all? Was he already dead?
He could hear something, now. Like faraway voices. But his eyes refused to open, even when his frozen body felt as if it were suddenly being dragged out of the calm drift.
The voices sounded closer, but they were now more like a mixture of low whining, growling, scraping and wet slapping. More frantic growls followed, and he vaguely heard snapping and crackling nearby.
What felt like an eternity passed, and gradually he could feel his scales and wings growing warm. His wings felt heavy, but he attempted to stretch one out. Something cracked and slid off his wing, and his claws twitched and he flexed his feet. His eyelids began to flutter open, but everything was blurred. Blinking, his vision started to clear, and what he saw startled him.
He was laying on one side next to a small fire that consumed twigs and bits of log, near a frozen riverbank. Piles of ice and snow began to melt around him. But it was his visitors that intrigued him.
He was crowded by several Flattails.
Some of them were growling and whining again, looking up at him and gesturing with their little paws and slapping their tails to the ground, but they didn't appear angry or seem to mean him harm.
“I-I'm s-sorry,” he said to them, his body shivering and teeth clacking. “I d-don't know w-what y-you're...”
He stopped when one of them stepped forward, carrying a small basket full of fish, and set it on the ground beside him before stepping back with the others. It chittered something else he didn't understand, and it looked at him again expectantly.
Realizing how hungry he now was, he sat up and leaned over the basket, taking a single fish, and swallowed it whole.
“Thank you,” he said before digging into the fish again.
