Winter nights in the desert were extraordinarily cold. Life rarely stirred aboveground as many creatures went into hibernation. Sometimes, frost crept over the prickly saguaros, coating in them in sheer white. Then the mornings came, golden warmth slowly stretched over the seemingly barren land.

Yggdrasil moved silently as the sun rose, casting brilliant hues of ochre across the shifting sands. She eventually stopped before the dry riverbed. Her paws dug through the topsoil to retrieve the rich clay hidden beneath. She slowly molded a lump of clay into a distinctive shape of a dragon. Then, the horns made out of rich copper.

She set it down to allow it harden in the resplendent light of the sun, and then she carved runes in an ancient tongue long forgotten to others. Then, the statue stood alone among the sagebrush.

Thus, Chantal was born. However, Yggdrasil left shortly after Chantal came to life full-grown. Her hardened scales creaked as she stretched and towered over the saguaros, her brilliant hazel eyes taking in her new home.
