"And now was acknowledged the presence of the Red Death. He had come like a thief in the night. And one by one dropped the revellers in the blood-bedewed halls of their revel, and died each in the despairing posture of his fall..."
PyU92rt.png

He was used to the dust and the pain in his back as he spent his days bent over, working the soil with his bare hands. He was used to blisters from handling the scythe day in, day out, from pulling out ripe vegetables, from the work of harvest and the pressure of forming resistant soil into more willing, softer shapes. He really was little more than a farmer’s boy, covered head to tail in dust and wearing a sunny smile on his lips from feeling the pleasant soreness of spending a day with fulfilling work.

Farming was hard, truly, but it was also an honorable occupation, there was something so utterly satisfying in seeing the storage of the Empire filled to the brim with corn and fruits from their own soil, raised and nurtured into a state of being edible, enjoyable. Lillium could have easily spent his whole life like this, taking over the small farm of his parents, would they ever decide to retire. He knew more about swinging the scythe to cut down stems of corn and wheat than the etiquette at court.

The only thing he knew about the Veiled Gardens was the fairytale atmosphere surrounding this place. Never had he thought he would see it in person, not to mention live in this place, too clean and pristine, not a speck of dust in sight and the only thing growing from the soil here were roses. Black thorned, purple crowned roses that always seemed to sway in an invisible, non existing wind. It was unsettling, truly and deeply, the realm of nobility was a cruel one, as vicious as it was beautiful, eating up those too weak and meek, those that were different had little to no chance of survival. Not if they wanted to stay sane and whole.

How he came to be there, from working the fields day in, day out, to pacing the hallways of his too lavish home, was a story that still made his head spin. It could sound like a fairytale, a myth of old if the words were placed correctly, but once the luster came off, the truth was a darker one, one that would make a foul tale to tell. It started simple, with the exchange of coins for land. Not with his parents, of course not, they were poor but somewhat happy, living outside the city, near the forests. Away from the slums and the misery.

The noble that had owned their land previously, had died, a dagger in the dark, poison in their tea, a noose around their neck, the manner of how death had come for them were not important, only that their belongings were bought up by a fair lady with an iron fist over those that she owned. She came to inspect her newest purchase, the smell of figs and flower petals trailing after her like the veil of a wedding gown, she visited the farm, walked along the fields. He barely noticed her, too focused on kneeling in the dust and dirt, hands deep in holes he had dug himself. Placing new seeds for the next harvest, she came to him, curious about him. Lillium was flattered, but paid it little attention otherwise as he rambled on, sunny smile spread wide over dirtied cheeks and eyes alight with simple minded, yet infectious passion.

The Lady, despite standing out like an expensive garden flower among weeds, kept talking to him, their conversation going on and on, long enough for the day to pass into the evening. He even invited her to join dinner at the farm, surprised that someone of noble blood would agree. Lillium was blind to the way his parents fidgeted the entirety of the evening, exchanged nervous looks as they witnessed their son’s budding friendship to the lady. He was naive and he was foolish, idealistic at heart that he believed simple, platonic friendship was all the lady could have wanted from him.

She left and he thought that was it, that he could now return to his easy, hard working and rewarding way of life. A fool he had been, true and thoroughly, for not even weeks afterwards, letters upon letters piled in their humble abode, the handwriting elegant, the paper heavy and expensive, the scent of figs and flowers still clinging to it. The lady asked for his company and Lillium was hesitant to obey, mainly because one does not refuse someone of the Veiled Gardens. It couldn’t be too bad, he thought. And he was right, the first time and the second or third he visited the lady for a day or two, everything was fine, enchanting even.

Rumor soon started to spread, his arrival was a breeze of fresh air and all the nobles were interested in playing with him. But their games were wicked ones, cruel ones. Games that left him with bleeding wounds, mentally, that showed him what was festering underneath that pretty facade. Lillium wanted nothing more than to run away the first time it happened. And the second time. And third. He tried to let the lady down gently, to navigate her gaze on anyone else, because he wanted just his old life back.

The lady - Saray - didn’t liked being refused, she overheard his words of protest and tightened her grip, whispered honeyed words of how she would raze his parents fields and burn down the farm, should he refuse her again. She pulled him in her arms as she spoke of marriage, of how she would make him a lord. Of how happy she was and how she loved his smile. The same one that grew more and more dim as he withered like a cut flower. Unable to survive in the Veiled Gardens. Among vipers and snakes, jackals and hounds of hell.

He had everything but his freedom, a wife, wealth, a daughter that loved him yet visited him far too rarely. All the beauty in the world, all the promises and all the distractions could not cover the fact that he was trapped in a cage of gold, he did not belong here, he wanted so badly to return to his old life of blister covered hands, of feeling the soil crumble and shift into something of his creation.

The only times he feels something akin to peace of mind, even if short lived, is when he is in the garden of their lavish, extravagant home. Their flowerbeets are the most beautiful in the wholeness of the Veiled Gardens. But that barely manages to distract Lillium from the hurt, from the emptiness within.

Hired to make him smile,
allowed and wanted, to bring
back the smile that was on
the verge of dying. Between
folk dances and kisses stolen
in campfire's gleam, he wanted
and wanted and loved.
