"And now was acknowledged the presence of the Red Death. He had come like a thief in the night. And one by one dropped the revellers in the blood-bedewed halls of their revel, and died each in the despairing posture of his fall..."
PyU92rt.png

She was the last attempt to save a dying family, killed by incompetence and cursed with a son that failed, over and over and over again the meaning of grandeur. Ulysses couldn’t even hold onto his own dignity, not even if he tried. Which he didn’t, it was painfully obvious and of course the family was grateful for her arrival.

It wasn’t even hard to meet the expectations, be sweet, smile and nod, give them the feeling of superiority, simple expectations, even simpler pleas, how could Ulysses fail at even this? But come to think, her older brother was a failure in every meaning of the word, everything he attempted, everyone he touched, he brought them only down, twisted and failed.

Politics, diplomacy, breathing new life into the dying business, she did it all while still melting the baby fat off her bones. Mother was so proud of her, father could not stop singing her praises either, those that could have spoken up, that knew of her ruthlessness, her iron grip and her hidden thorns no longer possessed a tongue to speak. People, she learned quickly, were there to be used. No one was safe from her either.

Her friends? Useful pawns with a limited repeat. She had to be careful, but that was why she picked those below her, to learn and to study, how far could she push, how far was too far? How much could she take until they bucked and tried to get away? Too much, she took everything, their lives, their wealth, their reputation and their looks, what need did they have for it anyways, they were dead men walking after all.

And what did her useless brother do in the meantime? Nothing of course, hiding behind the gleaming hardwood and ivory of his piano, behind half finished symphonies he would never replay in front of a public audience anyways. She sighed and she shook her head, stepped over empty bottles and smashed glass, past pillows heavy with tears and choked his hysteric weeping into smothered silence, eyes cold, empty.

You are lucky, brother dear, that you still hold some use to me., she smiled, sweet like poison, toxin eating away her kindness akin to time eroding even the grandest statue of steel. Be a dear and don’t ruin my wedding with your tasteless antics.

Upon his confusion, she only sighed, because he didn’t understand, of course not. Listening wasn’t Ulysses’ strength to begin with. Shaking her head, she opted to leave him in his misery, there was too much to do anyways, she had no time to hold his hand, to shield him from their furious parents. Rightfully in their wrath at their useless, untalented son. The family business was threatening to die ever since the mines of Undying City closed, old respect and influence only lasted ever so long until once loyal allies would grow restless. So she took it upon herself, turned her gaze towards the fat prey that was the Capitol, white skinned, pale boned, lustered with gold and divinity. Here, the Lorelei family was a wildcard, an unknown entity.

And she played it well. Her new husband had the influence, she had the money. He was perfect for becoming her puppet to use, a judge in a city that claimed two-faced divinity at the front, yet the mold on its bones was worse than any abomination that could crawl from the depths of the pits. She made sure everyone saw her at the wedding, the stunning bride, the perfect sweetheart, while in the meantime, her parents drowned in their own blood. She was innocent, she was guilty, no one cared.

She intended to stay. And it was adorable, at first, to witness Crowe flinching from her every touch, blind and helpless, he was vulnerable and grew bored so quickly, in the aftermath of their parents death, she played coy with Ulysses. Her useless brother who she intended to use as a scapegoat. He was still at her side, running after her like he was a well bred but in the end disappointing dog. If only her new husband was equally loyal, equally willing to roll over at her urging.

Alias, Crowe refused to touch her, refused to give her an heir to the point that it became insulting. No one denied her what she wanted, what she needed to keep her business afloat, growing. An Heir, a security, something to keep everything from falling back into Ulysses’ hands. Spreading rumors about Crowe’s lack of potency was only fair game, yet another move in this long term match of chess. The same kind that used people instead of ivory figurines and that was played against countless, faceless opponents.

It became so much worse, Ulysses, this foolish, useless brother of hers, thought her lack of interest in her husband meant he was open for the grabs. That he could touch with his soiled and twisting hands what was hers. The threat she whispered into his ear, as he wept into his pillows once more, crashed down from the height she called forth by the powder she laced within his wine, should have been enough.

She really thought he would understand.

Someone that finally
understood, she never
thought to find a man
like that. Not only did
he accept, he took in
her child, the only reason
for a loveless marriage.
He even offered something
she was not familiar with,
this elusive happiness
everyone but her seems to
enjoy.
