Biography
"I'm aware that I look quite out of place" – the house centipede said – "but I assure you that this is exactly where I'm meant to be."
The cat stalked circles around its prey. "Is that so?"
"Show me your paws," the house centipede said.
The cat raised its pristine mitts. "These are the cleanest tools in the house." It licked one for good measure.
"Second to mine," the house centipede bragged, splaying its thirty feet for the cat to see. Each one was spotless.
"How did you get them like that?" The cat bugged its eyes.
"I preen them each day," the house centipede said. "And when I'm forced to pick up where I left off, such as right now" – it dragged a leg through a slot in its forceps – "I know exactly which leg I licked last."
"That's amazing. And to think, I only have four to keep track of!" The cat began to lick its paws furiously.
"Don't feel bad. It's my god-given talent." The centipede sighed. "Yours is looking hospitable."
"I do look hospitable." The cat fluffed its mane. "But I don't understand why the master would want to stomp on such a fascinating creature as you."
"I suppose your master hasn't had a conversation with a house centipede."
The cat frowned, then stepped close and lowered its nose. "Dare I say I've fallen in love?"
The house centipede stared up with its faceted eyes. "Dare I say you're right to do so?"
"I'll let you live." The cat pranced away, wagging its tail. "We should all fall in love with the long-legged house centipede."
