Biography
But the raven, sitting lonely on the placid bust, spoke only,
That one word, as if his soul in that one word he did outpour.
Nothing further then he uttered - not a feather then he fluttered -
Till I scarcely more than muttered `Other friends have flown before -
On the morrow he will leave me, as my hopes have flown before.'
Then the bird said, `Nevermore.'
~ Edgar Allan Poe; The Raven

The Queen of Crows, as she's called respectfully and more than a little fearfully by her clanmates, prefers to make her home at the farthest, highest reach of the lair, as far away from the other dragons as possible. None of them know her real name, if she even has one, but they gave her the title due to the vast flock of crows who always surround her, giving her the deference due a queen. (Some dragons of the clan swear they've even seen them spread their wings and bow to her.) The rest of her clan gives her a similar deference, both for her forbidding reputation, and the valuable service she provides. Her crows serve as a vast fleet of information gatherers, her eyes on the wind, and they bring her information no other dragon could gather. Very few suspect the bird circling above them, if they even notice it at all, and her flock can range far across the region. She never deigns to deliver her information in person, but any dragon of the clan visited by one of her crows knows to remove the message tied around its leg to see their latest report. Because she dislikes the company of anyone but her crows, most clan members are forbidden to enter her eyrie. Some of the more mischievous or daring hatchlings sometimes dare each other to sneak into her lair, to prove how brave they are. If they're not driven off before they enter by the clouds of screeching, clawing crows, the furious hiss and bared fangs of the occupant lunging at them out of the dark generally manage. Such instances are always reported, via irritable crow, and punished severely. The Queen of Crows is dangerous, and not to be played with, and her role as a mistress of espionage is too valuable to the clan to risk losing. If she has a desire for solitude, it will be granted to the best of their ability. Even the high ranking clan members allowed within her reach are never greeted by anything more than silence, and should they come too close, she'll hiss and bare her fangs at them even if they're the clan leader. That is the only sound anyone ever hears from her. Like her crows, or perhaps on behalf of them, she does seem to have a penchant for jewelry and shiny things. It's whispered that she has a vast hoard of treasure, in the deepest recesses of her eyrie, delivered coin by coin from the beaks of her crows. It's true that if a gift of jewelry or gems is left outside her door, her notes take on a certain pleased tone to them. Or at least, they seem to. She's rather difficult to read, in any form. None of them are entirely sure how she communicates with the crows. There are rumors of course. That she never speaks because she split her own tongue to gain the gift of animal speech. That her blindfold hides eyes pecked out by the crows, who devoured them so that she could see through their eyes. That some terrible enemy blinded and muted her to keep her from telling his secrets, and the blood he shed turned into her murder of crows, crying out her vengeance for her. So far no one has ever worked up the courage to ask, and she has not volunteered it. ~ Story by Mirrorstone |
