Lantern Maker
|
Not every Guardian finds a Charge. There are those who settle for someone or something they like, and resolve to ignore that last bit of the Search that keeps eating away at them. There are also those who never give up, and who continue searching even until their dying days. Smaragdyn is somewhere in between. He left his birthplace early on, laden with advice and well-wishes from his family. "Try looking here," they said, and "These people might be able to help you." So many hints and advice — surely they'd help him find what he was looking for! It has been many years since then. Smaragdyn is a grown Guardian now; he has raised many children and seen them set out on their own Searches. Most of them have found their Charges. Others, he suspects, are still searching — just as he is. He has tried many jobs and proven to be competent at them, but none have given him the joy, the spark, that he suspects a Charge will bring. There is one he sticks with, though, for he believes it will aid his Search. He makes enchanted lanterns. Many of these are no different from the ones sold in common marketplaces: globes of light that bob around their owner's wings. But Smaragdyn has met a lot of mages in his time, and has learned several useful tricks from them. The making of locators, of magical seeking devices... He hopes to make lanterns that will lead Guardians to their Charges. He remembers the mages nodding along with him. "A lovely idea!" they said. "Lanterns that grow brighter the closer the Guardian is to their Charge....Spelling 'Congratulations!' with fireworks once the Charge is found? That could use some work, but it's a nice gesture..." And he remembers the excitement fading from their faces as they considered the idea more carefully. "A nice gesture," they said, frowning thoughtfully, "but with these seeking devices, we need something to focus on. To track a missing dragon, we use a bit of scale, for example, or even just something they've held. We need descriptions. We need names. We need to know what we are looking for." And there was the problem: How could they craft a seeking spell when even the Guardian didn't know what they were seeking? It's a difficult project, but Smaragdyn is determined to try. Even if he doesn't succeed in this lifetime, his research, he hopes, will help other Searchers someday. He lives alone now, in a deep, dark forest, where often his home is the only source of light for any considerable distance. And sound, too: It's connected to Smaragdyn's laboratory, and sometimes the experiments he conducts get pretty noisy. But he also has a small lantern shop, and travelers who stop by may be intrigued by his story. It's not uncommon for them to ask if they can buy a lantern. "Does it really work?" they ask. Smaragdyn is always honest with them, and reminds them that he isn't certain. "But then," he says, a small and hopeful smile lighting up his face, "we won't know until we try."
