The Shrine Guardian

"Show no fear."

Personality
  • A creepy shrine guardian. It just sits next to its shrine like a gargoyle and stares unblinkingly at those who pass.
  • Deathly silent at night, but during the day flies swarm it en masse, like there is something rotting within that they cannot reach. Those who have dared to try and grab a fortune from its throat remark that it is crawling with thousands of writhing insectoid bodies. For some- it is the last thing they ever feel with that limb.
  • It stares and never blinks with empty, glazed eyes. While incredibly unsettling, it never gets up from its spot. The only part that moves is its jaw and neck. It will watch you the instant you enter its line of sight. As for groups, it will fixate on whoever is closest.

History
The light of the setting sun lances through the weeping willows like needles, glancing off the impenetrable ebony hide of the shrine keeper. The small, ornate structure is built of ancient wood, painted red, and it sits nestled between the motionless front claws of its guardian. It stares at you with unblinking eyes, a steady yellow glow in the twilight. There is an incessant buzzing that gets into your ears and makes you shake your head, and you see now that flies swarm about the head of the keeper. Its bared teeth are black from their numerous, crawling bodies.

The smell hits you as you approach, bogwater and something foul, sour, and you grip your offering tighter. Your expression is still, unwavering. The offering is set before the shrine.

The guardian leans its head down at a pace that makes it seem dead, puppet-like even. The flies disperse, but quickly recollect on its maw that now twists sideways with the tilt of its head. Neither of you breathe as it opens that wretched mouth.

At the back of its void-like throat, a stark piece of paper sits. You take the time to collect your emotions. You can't show anything, any reaction, or the moment you go to retrieve your fortune it'll bite your arm off.

The air inside its throat feels no different than that outside, but it is humid and the fluttering of thousands of wings and legs grace your flesh. Muscles trembling, you feel until you touch paper, and carefully remove your arm. Careful not to show desperation.

Its teeth snap shut long after your arm is removed, and its head returns to where it sits tall above the shrine, watching you with deep intent. Its onyx teeth shine in a grin, and you know better than to overstay your welcome.

With your certain fortune in hand, you turn your back on the shrine and its guardian.

“There's nothing we can do about any of this
We're drowning in a world we can't change
Open your eyes, the shadows sink
But no matter how it seems right now, this is reality”

Asphyxia - Cö Shu Nie
About
It's no secret that the bog just a ways away from the Pit is cursed. Fed by the underwater river, it is a place sourced by death.

One day it appeared on the path beside the bog, decently busy with traders. Lurks outside the Pit, on the edge of a nearby bog by a thin pathway with a slight clearing on the side. It's covered in weeping willows, flies swarming the air. At night, you can see its lifeless gaze staring, watching you pass. No one saw it appear, or knew where it came from. It would just sit there, guarding its shrine. It quickly became common knowledge that approaching without an offering was a bad idea. Rumors spread about the strange shrine watcher, and then the brave and the curious began to try and understand it.

If you approach and offer something to the shrine, the guardian will let you get close enough. Anyone can approach the shrine, though no one knows what it's for. Only the guardian knows. It will bare its perfect teeth, and tilt its head all the way to the side like it is contemplating you. If it deems your offering worthy, it will open its mouth. Those who reach into it without emotion- mimicking the statue- can pull a good fortune paper from its throat; but if one expresses fear or revulsion, it will bite off your limb. Take it, and though the good fortune is vague, it is certain to be true. Do not try and take more than one per day.

It will remember you.

Trivia
  • It stinks like frozen mud, dead leaves, and ladybugs. Funny, since most life avoids getting close to it. With an exception for flies, and those brave enough to approach it.
  • Despite living in a bog, where the only trees are willows, it is inexplicably covered in maple leaves. Beyond that, flies swarm it like the plague- in its mouth and over its eyes. It never blinks or moves, seeming unbothered by this.
  • May be made of stone, or perhaps its flesh has merely mummified. Rumors say it's a corpse, perfectly preserved beneath the rancid waters until one day the energy of the shrine summoned it to its new purpose.
