Biography

Brown Bear

Brown_Bear.png

One morning, a large satchel of gifts arrived at Morningstar gates: hand-crafted teas, artworks of mysterious origin, and leaves with medicinal notes scrawled on the pages folded to hold them. Attached to these goodies was a letter which read:

The dragons of Morningstar, not accustomed to receiving mail, were heartened by this kind gesture, but confused why this shy serpent didn't simply deliver the request himself.

To find out more, Leif and Freddy went out to visit this dragon in his home cave. They were invited inside by a gentle, rumbling voice, and to their surprise, the cave was barely high enough for Freddy to duck underneath. When they came into the room, they saw that B.B, staring with wide eyes and an adoring smile, was actually what appeared to be a large brown bear, with wings fashioned out of sticks resting on his back.

Confusion turned to fascination as the two dragons politely sat down for a cup of herbal tea, prepared with a stunning blend of roots they were not aware existed in these frigid woods. B.B spoke of his passion for the woodland areas of the Southern Icefields, showed his collections of trinkets, bones, and other forest findings. He detailed his life history: being raised by mammals despite knowing in his heart he was destined for a dragonly way of brown bear existence, being slowly left to fend for himself by a family that did not understand him, and his years of solo expeditions seeking out the natural abundance and hidden treasures of this iced-over continent. He explained that he wanted a home clan to return to with his many finds from the wilds, to share the trinkets, foods, and mysterious art pieces from the world beyond-- but that few dragons dared set up camp in these parts. He showed tomes of Brown Bear the Daring Dragon as evidence for his qualification (penned mysteriously in the same hand as the letter sent to Morningstar, but no less riveting to read). All his life, he'd been waiting for dragons like him to come to these woods, for a family whose curiosity was alight as his own.

Leif and Freddy excused themselves to discuss privately outside. After a very brief exchange, Leif returned inside alone. He sat down beside the fluffy fellow at the oak table and said,

"We...we know you are a brown bear."

The bear's heart sank.

"And we wouldn't have you any other way. If a dragon is what you'd like to become, then a dragon you shall be! Your story has moved us and your skills are stupendous. You, sir, are Morningstar dragon material, and we would be honored to take you in! You don't have to hide your brown bear goodness, many of us are fluffy as well! And did you know we hibernate?"

Brown Bear's mouth was resting open, his heart fluttering. Him!! An Honorary Dragon!!

He arranged to pack his things and meet the pair back at the clan's main lair. To his bewilderment, when he finally climbed the hill at the foot of the Morningstar gate on the eve of the next day, a banner was draped across the entryway:

Beneath the banner was a gathering of dragons waiting to meet their new brother. A reception was held, at which potion-makers, chefs, and warriors alike were were bustling with excitement to hear this local expert's perspective on the resources the natural world (or the caches of dragonmade worlds long-past) could provide for their endeavors. Brown Bear's heart was aglow, knowing for once that his calling to become a dragon among dragons, an explorer among explorers, had been met-- and he didn't even have to hide the beary parts of him that still felt true! At the end of the reception, he was gifted a marvelous set of sculpted wings, crafted in a tandem project by Starburst Stuart and Pistachio Pavlo. He'd never felt more powerful, more himself, in his entire life. He was determined to make these dragons proud to call him their brother.

And quickly, he did just that. As the clan's resource-gatherer, treasure-hunter, and wilderness expert, Brown Bear collects goodies from the natural world, braving cold that even ice dragons need a cocoa thermos to survive, to provide for his clan. Being the only one among them who can communicate with many species of local animal, he is also working with Fruit Snack Freddy and Cherry Syrup Chad to ensure the local beasts know that Morningstar is an ally to them. He also collects and maintains artifacts of mysterious origins, often including portraits of his own clan from otherworldly entities or prophetic societies of prior eras.
