"How bitterly ironic that the blind one leads those who can see."

Setral

Her cold, empty sleep ended, but the darkness of her dreams remained. The hatchling shuddered, scared and confused. But she relaxed slightly when she realized there was something covering her eyes. She shivered, still feeling alone and vulnerable.

"Wh-where's mommy?" She managed to ask, her small voice raspy and dry.

"Hush" An unfamiliar voice pierced the silence, kind but firm. The hatchling whimpered, but didn't say anything else. She was scared of the darkness around her. She wanted light. She wanted to see.
Panic continued flooding her, and when a dragon wrapped something around her arm, she nearly screamed.

"You'll be fine, kid." It was the same voice from earlier.

"Wh-who are you? Where am I? Where's my mommmm?" the hatchling asked again in a whimpering, scared voice.

"I'm a healer. You're in my den..." The healer didn't answer the last question.

The hatchling was too worried to answer. Was she lost? She couldn't sense the same type of magic around her like before. She tried to remember what had happened, but every memory in her mind was blurred and distorted. She almost started crying.
Then she was lifted into a sitting position.

"Let's remove the bandage from your eyes, shall we?" The voice was more gentle now.
The hatchling gulped.

"O-okay."
She felt it slowly being pulled away from her face. Then she opened her tired eyes.
Nothing.
It was dark.
She stared at the nothingness around her.

"Why is it dark? It's so dark. I-I..."
She heard a deep sigh.

"It's as I feared...you've been blinded by magic."

The hatchling felt like she was drowning. The logical thoughts in her brain stampeded by worry, terror and horror.
Blind?
She couldn't be blind.
She couldn't.
It was too much.
She was alone.
She felt it pressing down on her.
The pain.
The sorrow.
The darkness.

"I...I'm blind." She whispered numbly.

Maybe she was overreacting. Maybe she was weak. Maybe she should give up. It was too much.
But was she a quitter?
She wanted to be.
Oh, how she wanted to give up.
What could she do anyways?
She was just a hatchling.
A stupid, weak, blind hatchling.
Was she overreacting? She wanted to feel comfort in her pain. She wanted to be hugged and cuddled and loved.
She was scared.
But did she have a right to be?

After a few minutes of painful silence, the hatchling spoke.

"What...I...How...'Blinded by magic?'"

"Well, it seems like an excess of magic overwhelmed you. It happens a lot in the arcane lands...And yet, you're different." The healer sounded hesitant to say anything.

"Magic...W-what-how am I different?" She was trying, trying so hard to be brave. She felt so weak. And helpless. Was it even worth trying? She was pitiful. Blind. Empty.
Stupid magic.

"...The magic may have given you an ability...And all you need to harness it-probably-is an enchanted mask." The healer said slowly.
Realization dawned on the hatchling. Was that why she was being cared for? Because there was magic in her. Because she could do things now. They were going to use her.

"Oh...What...what is the...ability?" She asked in a quiet, hollow voice.

The healer was silent for what felt like ages. The hatchling sat in the endless darkness, waiting. She had no choice.
Why was she complaining? She'd just found that she had a purpose. Magic. An Ability. She should be grateful. Thankful. Eager.
But she just felt cold and lonely. So lonely.
And then the healer spoke.

"You can See Beyond."

"Beyond?" She repeated numbly.
The healer nodded, remembered the hatchling couldn't see, and sighed.

"Yes. Beyond. Perhaps to other planes and realities. Perhaps the future. Perhaps the past. We will only know when you use the mask."

"Where...where is the mask."

"It is-" Before the healer could finish, the hatchling heard a new dragon come in.

"Is she ready?" He asked in a gruff voice.

"I-yes. Yes. She's ready. We'll meet you in the treasury." The hatchling was picked up.
"Oh, I never got your name. What is it?"

"Setral"

"Oh. I'm Gear. I'm an automation."

"Oh. Ohhhhh"

And then they entered the treasury.

Setral half listened as they discussed what they were going to do. Finally, they came to a conclusion, and handed her the mask. As soon as she touched it, she could feel the powerful magic within. Slowly, she put it on.

Nothing.
And then-
Blue
little glowing dots of blue.
They swirled around her, dancing and leaping.
Then they all rushed at her, and she saw a vision.
And then another.
Hundreds.
They flooded her mind, filling her with pain and horror. Alternate universes and realities flashed before her. The future twisted around her, showing brief glimpses of what could happen. Thoughts that were not hers slipped into her thoughts, and the pain only grew.
She couldn't take off the mask.
It was a curse.
She desperately tried to escape her own mind, but she was buried under the masks power. Slowly, painfully, Setral started stuffing everything out. Anger, sadness, pain, loneliness.
They were everything now.

But finally.
Finally.
She could think again.
She could ignore the dragons screaming doom and destruction.
She could pretend the horrible futures weren't there.
She could pretend that she wasn't scared.

Setral heard a chuckle.
"I suppose it works then, eh?" The dragon laughed.

"Yes, it certainly seems like a success." Another added.

Setal winced as the pain pulsed inside her.
And then she made a decision.

She ran.

If it hadn't been for a small miracle, Setral would never have escaped. The mask gave her visions of her escaping, but it also flooded her senses with screaming dragons. Fear motivated her, and she kept running (and occasionally, bumping into walls or tripping), until she fell off the floating laboratory (or whatever it was). Setral barely had time to gasp with shock before she got a face full of water. She coughed and started to swim down, blindly hoping that she could hide somewhere in the depths.
She waited for a long time under the water. But she couldn't hold her breath forever.
Setral had a dim thought that she was safe, and then she was unconscious.

Setral woke up on the beach of Wind territory. As she was recovering, two dragons found her and brought her to their house. They took care of her, but soon she went on her way. Eventually, she found Feather's clan, and joined after receiving a vision of the future of the clan. She regretted that decision for the rest of her life, but other than the terrible visions, glimpses of the future, and occasional bouts of mind reading, Setral managed to make a life for herself as a sage and seer.
Most of the clan leaves her alone, which she doesn't mind too much.
She does wish that she could go home. Back to the arcane lands.
But she isn't safe there.
And so she stays, still a scared, lonely hatchling inside.
