It's hardly been a day into your stay with Scarlet Fever when you feel... it. A sense of being watched. Like eyes are boring holes into the back of your skull. There's never anyone there when you turn, never anything out of place when you catalog your belongings for the third time that day, but the feeling never quite dissipates. The cause - or so you presume - reveals himself to you in time. He is imposing - tall with long and impossibly branching antlers, body pockmarked with flowers that twitch and emit a faded sweet scent that cloaks your senses just-so it's noticeable but the effects less so. His questions are rapid-fire and batter at you until you're too mentally exhausted to consider why the interrogation is happening in the first place. Eventually, he decides you aren't a threat. Or, what he's looking for? That you know nothing? You're still unclear on most fronts. He leaves you with a petition- come to him if anything strange happens. You decide not to comment. You realize that night that the sensation of being watched still lingers. You have an inkling that this time it is not the Gaoler. A third-generation Gaoler with few ties to the Fortress of Ends, Lycoris has never followed the Orders nor the will of the Icewarden. She does, however, have that innate instinct to Seek and Contain. Her parents, who were well-meaning but strict, found this behavior impossible to curb. She pursued it as it pursued her and gave up a life spent studying for her true passion - hunting down criminals and bringing them to justice. Unfortunately for Lycoris, her parents did not approve. After permanently cutting ties with her family, she fled the Mirrorlight Promenade and headed west with little idea as to what she'd do or even where she'd end up going. She bounced from clan to clan within the Tangled Wood, performing odd jobs with a case here or there and leaving once she was tired of the strange looks and the murmurs about her eyes. She pushed on, but every day had begun to feel like a lost cause. Her lucky break came with a trading caravan, passing through the Driftwood Drag and on their way to the Contagion. They spoke of rumor in hushed voices - on the coup of this clan and the taboo practice of that clan. A mercenary in red shushed them, tired of the increasingly foolish accusations, but it did little to curb their growing enthusiasm. "If you want some real news," another piped up, "'s more trouble at the Arcane border." Lycoris's ears perked. "Another bunch of fools obsessing over rocks again?" A third rolled their eyes. "I mean, yes, but listen. These ones - somethin's wrong with 'em. 's not just obsessing any more, they're recruitin' for somethin'. Radiation's really scrambled 'em." They hissed. Lycoris hadn't noticed she'd stopped to listen in until she'd been noticed and the group had quieted down. She'd heard enough. A case was a case, and she wasn't one to turn down an opportunity. |
