Frigid's Story "Has there been any word from the border?" Frostbite shook his head. "Lady Lyanna is the same as ever, safe behind her tower walls." The Princess was expressionless as she turned to the window. "And from the forests?" From this angle Frostbite could see the many scars on her wings and back, a crisscross mess of a thousand and one battles. "The self-declared prince Aelfinn has accepted King's message of parley and sent his adopted brother Sourwood to be fostered under Sika." Better news she could not have received... but there was no joy in her. "He's a Coatl, like Aelfinn?" The Imperial shifted his feet, uncomfortably cramped under the shallow ceilings. "Yes, and very close in age. His exotic coloring has caused quite the stir among our young females." "Good, very good. Make sure he spends time in the main cavern among them." Her robes flashed with the shimmer of her jewels as she turned back to him. Her beautiful horned head was backlit by the afternoon sun. "There is something else." Frostbite sighed. "Yes, your Highness. It's... the Skydancer. It is rumored that her mate has returned from beyond the borders. They have successfully nested." "Icewarden's breath," Frigid cursed. "Her plans will soon be in motion. We must send an emissary to Lyanna at once." Frostbite nodded. "I will go myself." He could see her claws clench in a sudden spasm. "I need you here-" "Your daughter needs me there. Is there any dragon you trust more?" The Spiral could not afford to be selfish; she knew he was right. "Caster will allow this?" Frostbite raised his chin defiantly. Frigid held up a claw. "Forgive me. I did not mean to insult you." The Imperial looked down at her and his heart was full of grief. "I must go at once if we are to beat Cersei's spies." With a dismissing nod, the Princess turned away from him again. As it always was. "Goodbye." The news had reached Lyanna in time. All had seemed calm. Cersei had not warred on the kingdom, and had instead sent her only daughter to court to visit Sunbeam's garden. Frigid had nearly believed that the peace would last. Until the day that Myrcella disappeared in the woods. No one knew what had happened. The beautiful dragon had ventured into the forest with other youths on her own little adventure. Frigid grimaced remembering the tense face of Winterbloom as the spy relayed the little information they could glean from the scattered remnants of that party. One male dragon who returned to court claimed it was bandits. He had claw marks all over his face and neck. Winterbloom had doubted his story. "He said they had swords. Why on earth would they scratch him if they had swords?" She had put this question to one of her maids out of the blue, aggressively shedding her robes as she prepared for a bath and stomping into her private pool. The poor girl had been so startled the basin in her claws had fallen to the ground and spilled bath oil all over a valuable rug. Frigid had dismissed her soon after because the child would not stop shaking when alone with her. Others had said differently, as whispers from their hiding places around the kingdom made clear. Myrcella had been attacked, another young female was actually the one attacked, a battle between male dragons broke out and the females accidentally got in the way... at least three female dragons were missing. |
