Arum was the product of a very enthusiastic seeker's crusade to find the truth about the definition of life. Using metals and bones, Arum's's parents built him instead of hatching him from an egg. They were determined to find out if life was a product of biology or thought in any form.

Because of the strange way he looks, and the odd way he speaks, Arum wasn't really accepted in the light realm he was born into. It took some wandering to find a place that would accept him for the way he was, but finally he came to The Greenhouse. This was a place filled to the brim with dragons who were different in some way. Being different was just being.

At first, Arum didn't know if he had anything to offer his new family. This led to him forming a close friendship with a couple of other newcomers (Aster and Delphinium) who were as different-looking as he was. It is taking some time, though, for Arum and his friends to realize they are loved for being just themselves, and not what they give to the others.

Because of his construction, there are a few flaws that make Arum self conscious - like his speech. As such, he's always nervous around strangers.
