The Gravedigger

Status:
Alive

Silent | Wise | Old | Diligent | Benevolent

Bodies litter the Scarred Wasteland like discarded garbage. Each and every corpse is useful to the Necromancer in some way. However, a busy sorceress does not have the time to go collect old bones herself. That is where the Gravedigger comes in. The Gravedigger is a nameless slave whose job it is to gather corpses and bones from the Wastelands surrounding the workshop. The Gravedigger is nameless only because she cannot speak. She is an elderly dragon and the marks around her neck and ankles indicate that she has been a slave for a very long time. One of her old masters likely removed her tongue many years ago.

The Gravedigger does not need to speak, however. Her job is simple. Every morning, the Gravedigger leaves the workshop with an empty sack and a shovel. She returns at the end of the day with a full sack of bodies. Due to the Gravedigger's diligence, Grimoire treats her slightly better than the other slaves.

However, the Gravedigger is actually more than she appears. In truth, she is a powerful shaman who, many years ago, willingly sold herself into slavery. She draws her powers from the suffering and anguish of other dragons. While this may sound sinister, it is actually anything but. The Gravedigger absorbs the suffering around her, then magically transmutes it into strength, determination, and bravery. Her magic is subtle but powerful. By her mere presence, she is able to inspire dragons in despair and give them something to live for. The Gravedigger goes where she is needed most - to the bleakest and darkest and most evil places - and lights a small candle of hope. Her past masters have often sensed her power and attempted to stymie it, but it continues to work as long as she is alive. She remains obedient, diligent, and useful so not to draw Grimoire’s attention - thus allowing her benevolent magic to continue helping the slaves of Workshop.

Unfortunately, due to her close relationship with Sallow, the Gravedigger has been on the receiving end of some unwanted attention from the acolytes. Cartilage and Osiris have had their eyes on her lately - and they have reported their suspicions to their grim master. Time will tell if the Gravedigger can continue her quiet magic... or if she will be exposed and killed.
