"H-hello. I am... um..."

Aleph says:
"Quarantined Subject ID 14: Aelig. Fae Male. Defining Features: Longer and leaner bodied than average of fae species. Bears a glancing resemblance to spiral dragons. Preliminary observations indicate that his odd patterns emit levels of arcane radiation, functioning like blood through those veins. Further observation is required."

Derelict says:
"Now with magic within our grasp, no longer will we be limited to our claws and fangs. We shall spread our spores to all corners of the land. They shall never be able to forget us. Decades after the last soul who challenged us is dead, their children will remember us by the songs their widowed mothers sang to them. We'll be in their dreams–and in their worst nightmares too."

They were swarming again in the twilight. The mists seemed to thicken and fill with light, aglow with slashes of magic as the Fae colony hunted. They were a cloud, a single entity made of many tiny bodies, appearing like a ghost or an angel haloed by the light. The swarm shimmered as it moved, and Aelig could not have told you how near it was or how far away.

Aelig's long, lean body was curled around the pointed peak of a spine of crystal. His fans flash. Up, up, low sweeping wave and downcast wings. Question. Confusion. Beseeching.

"Use your words," Makutu said gently, though the expression on his face revealed he knew well what his young son meant.

Aelig run his tongue slowly across his lips, attempting to conjure the right thoughts to his mind.

"W-Why did he call you a traitor?" He squawked finally, his voice shrill, and words came tumbling out quickly. His fans flashed up and down again.

Makutu winced. "It's nothing. He was referring to the Clan I lived with before I met your mother. He believes I betrayed them by leaving."

"Is this not home?"

Makutu's eyes softened. "It could be your home, my dear, darling boy. You have friends here. But I have been gone too long for this to be home again. There are too many memories here. Too many ghosts for one such as I."

Aelig's fans drooped. Longing. Disappointment. Bewilderment.

"My friends d-don't like you."

Makutu nodded. "They see me as too different. I am from a different world beyond the atoll. I do not flock with them, and I do not use their magic. I have spent too long away from Arcane."

Aelig frowned as he digested Makutu's words. He turned them over in his mind, uncertain if he understood.

In the pause, they watched the cloud of Fae. Aelig's fins twitched and flicked, responding to the smell of magic on the air, which was a language all its own. His fans flash, a call and answer to some distant comment amidst the magical cacophony of the swarm. Beside him, Makutu stayed perfectly still.

"You should stay." Makutu said. "You could have a great life here in the colonies."

Aelig immediately shook his head. His fins flat against his head as he tucked himself closer to Makutu. I follow.

"I do not know if you would be happy in a Plague Clan," Makutu smiled ruefully at him. "Insect-catching would be the least of your worries. You would have to spend your time hiding from much bigger predators. In the Plague-lands, you would be the bug."

Aelig held his wings stiff, and raised his head high.

"A bug can still sting!" A wreath of magic coated his claws and he mimed a slash through the air. Pride. Anticipation. Buoyancy.

"Oh yes, you're right." Makutu grinned. "And you've been getting much better at stinging!"

Aelig puffed up his chest, and chattered, his excitement now making his words unintelligible.

"Breathe Aelig! Enunciate!" Makutu laughed. Then he gestured up at the sky, at the shining cloud of Fae. "Go flock with your friends. Enjoy yourself. Then we must depart come the morning."

Aelig leapt off his perch, lightly gliding to the next wall of protruding crystal and scaling it with silent ease. He disappeared into the flock, fins rapidly moving as he chattered with the other Fae. Makutu watched him go, a still shadow below the cloud. His smile faded. Regret clouded his gaze.

"My son," Makutu sighed. "the sting of a bee does not deter you from eating it. It means little in that dusty hell, where all prey are predators and all predators are prey."

Could he imagine his excitable, argumentative, energetic son as part of a Plague Clan? The dawn was swift approaching, an ominous promise of what awaited ahead.

"No. I cannot take you down this path. If you were to raise your claw against a Plague dragon, it will be the last thing you ever do."

But Aelig did not hear his words. He flew amidst the crystals as one with that halo of Fae in the misty dawn. He was a gossamer-winged flash of colour, snapping up the fleeing bugs with well-practiced shocks of magic leaping from his claws. He did not see the shadow behind him, moving as he moved.

When he returned, when he landed back down upon the crystal, Makutu was not there.

And then the glow in the air faded, and the cloud, and it was day, and he was alone.
