Biography
DR. HENRY JEKYLL (JEK)
Angry Apothecary |
Jek is responsible for running the city's apothecary, along with his trusted friend Eddie. Both of them suffer from a magical defect which requires them to take medicine and wear charms to suppress their magic lest they spontaneously combust. Jekyll himself takes on the brunt of the rumors that come with his name, with customers insinuating that Jek and Eddie are a split personality instead of business partners. He's always defensive as a result, and can't trust anyone except his staff and Eddie. |
“Sir, someone to see you!” Carmilla yelled into the back of the apothecary, startling Jek from his work. A small vial of mercury began to tip over and was just barely caught as the doctor reoriented himself.
“Millie, you know you can’t startle me like that! I’m mixing something for Dr. West, and you know the things he orders.”
“Oh. Oh. Sorry, sir, just finish whenever you’re available!”
“It’s alright, don’t worry about it. I’m just about done here.” The tundra corked the mixture of vile green fluid and placed it in a box of straw. Flamecaller Above knows he needed as many layers of packaging between it and him. He put away all his ingredients, then picked up the box and then emerged into the main storefront.
The apothecary was mostly quiet save his messenger boy Lars, Carmilla, and the visitor. Eddie and her harpy assistant Jacob were already out on an errand to procure him some herbs for their medicine, as she usually was. After passing the box to Lars, wholeheartedly agreeing with the young corven’s fearful whispers about the things West did, he went to greet the visitor.
He was a large gaoler, exceedingly fluffy for his breed. Though Jek was already on edge, he softened a little at the other dragon’s sweet smile. At least, hopefully, this conversation wouldn’t end as badly as so many already had.
“Good morning. How may I help you?”
“I’d like these ingredients, thank you.” The list presented to Jek had an array of ingredients, as well as an address to a clan in the plaguelands. Strange. When the page started to sizzle, he quickly handed it to Millie and placed his paws in the well-scorched grooves on the counter.
“I’ll get on this at once. May I have a name for the delivery?”
“Dr. Henry Jekyll.”
“Thank you, I’ll...” Jek stopped dead. “Sorry, what?”
“It’s my name. Henry Jekyll.” The gaoler frowned a bit. “Something wrong?”
“That’s... also my name. Though I’d prefer just Dr. Jek.” The tundra frowned as well as general confusion swept the room.
“Well, nice to meet you, Dr. Jek.” Jekyll extended a paw. Jek took it, only to find the ends of the gaoler’s fluff burning around his paws.
“Oh, oh Flamecaller I’m so sorry, this always happens, let me-“
“It’s alright, Doctor. Don’t worry.” Jekyll attempted to slow the tundra’s panicked descent into an apologetic pile of mush. “This isn’t the worst that’s happened to me. Don’t sweat it.”
“Huh?” Jek calmed for a second to pop open the flask by his side and drink the silvery liquid within. Then, he continued the conversation. “What does that mean?”
“Well, I have medicine because of some minor issues. It’s nothing, really, but a little scorched fur isn’t worth... this.” He gestured to the tundra’s eyes and paws, now blazing a brighter yellow and singing anything within touch. They had slowly begun to return to their normal heat, but his claws had still made deep black gouges in the counter.
“I suppose you’re right. Apologies. That was very unprofessional of me.”
“It’s no problem, just please make that compound and have it delivered soon. Thank you, Dr. Jek.”
“May I ask what this is for?” The tundra called after Jekyll. “... if I can, that is. Sorry to intrude. We all have medicine for our reasons.” He patted the small satchel and flask he held at his side.
“It’s complicated.”
“Ah. I understand then. Have a good day, Jekyll.”
“Same to you, sir.” The gaoler left the store, leaving Jek and Millie alone again.
“Sir, do you want me to ask Galina to fix the counter again? It’s been a while.” The serthis gestured to the variety of gouges and char marks on the table. The freshest one stood out among the scorched imprints slowly burned into the surface, harsh and dark instead of smoothed like the rest of them.
“Yes. Please schedule her to resculpt the counter. I’ll be making this, if Lars comes back in tell him that he can deliver the hydra scale powder to Dr. Campbell like he asked this morning.”
