Biography

Preludeicetop.png
MECHANIST
icev1.png The frozen expanse sent a shiver rippling down Prelude's long spine as he trudged through the heavy midwinter snow. He looked back over his shoulder and shivered again as he saw nothing but frozen waste behind him; there was no going back now. He had left the village at sunrise and now night was rapidly falling. The setting sun was already staining the evening sky the same color as Prelude's mulberry-hued scales.

He could just make out the Southern Icefield's northern coast where the tundra gave way to the unforgiving sea and a field of ice floes. This was as good a place as any to stop for the night.

A freezing gust and a flurry of snow set Prelude to looking for whatever meager shelter he could find in the frozen expanse, and in the evening's dim light, he caught sight of a rocky outcropping that would, at the very least, provide some meager shelter from the biting wind. He snaked his way into the hollow of the rock, intending to curl up until morning, only to find the makeshift den was already occupied.

"S-sorry, didn't realize this was taken, I'll just go--"

The small tuft of fur in front of him shifted, and the Tundra dragon untucked its head from where it was curled up between its forelegs. "No need," he said brightly. "Plenty of room."

Prelude disagreed, but the Tundra was already shifting over into the corner, making more space in the hollow for Prelude to get out of the cold.

There was a long silence. Prelude still hadn't moved from the mouth of the cave. The wind began howling even louder outside of the cave.

"Well, you coming in, or are you going to stand out in the snow all night?"

Prelude scurried into the cave and curled his long body up as small as he could in the corner of the den, trying not to inconvenience the Tundra. Despite his small size, the Tundra's fur was radiating warmth within the small space of the den, a welcome change from the snow and ice.

"My name's Thoth, by the way," the Tundra said.

"Prelude."

Another silence. Another shiver.

"Are you cold? I'm small but I'm warm." Prelude heard Thoth uncurl himself from the other corner of the den, his claws against the stone floor of the cave muffled by the thick fur on his feet. The warmth that washed over him just from the Tundra drawing closer was like sinking into one of the hot springs back in the village he'd left just that morning, and he could already feel his shivering subsiding.

Thoth dropped back onto the floor of the cave, the warm fur on his back brushing up against the Coatl's side. The two dragons settled in for a long night, not knowing that the sun setting across the frozen tundra brought with it the dawn of a new lifelong friendship.
