" I'll prove them wrong. "

They called him weak from the very beginning. Worthless and small. Perhaps worthy of the rank "Squire" if he slaved for the position over years and years. The Knighthood paraded about as the ultimate scion of good--it's what led his parents to them when he was too much a burden. The schism between public face and reality was staggering. He felt that division firsthand.

When he was young it wasn't so big a deal. Children are, after all, rarely so harsh as adults. Everyone was the same, then. He was no smaller than they were, no "less worthy" or more incapable. His adoptive parents were kind enough, though rather distant. He had a happy childhood, as all dragons ought.

But when he matured, everything changed. His friends only got bigger while he seemed to shrink. For the first time, he realized that he was different. No longer was he a little guardian child like all his kinsfolk. He was a coatl youth who was wildly outpaced by those around him. The realization unsettled him; his differences had never been demonstrated to him. He didn't know that, from then on, he was smaller than everyone else was. In everything. Yet his ambitions rose as though he was a guardian, strong and tall.

He wanted to be a Knight so, so badly. The desire consumed him, as it did his friends.

So when Apprentice Season came, he put his name in alongside them. He didn't understand the queer looks pointed his way, or the disapproving glare from the Headmaster when he turned in his ticket. He lined up with all the other youth on Apprenticing day, eyes scanning the crowd for who his mentor might be. He tried not to think of how there were no coatls in the assembly; no dragons but guardians and more guardians.

He waited for his name to be called. For a kindly, stern dragon to take him under wing and teach him what being a Knight meant. When it was, he expected a scattered, polite applause, or at least a few claps from his family. But all that came was a silence, oppressive and thick. And then there were laughs, echoing around the arena. His parents, his friends, everyone was wheezing with laughter. One old Knight stumbled forward, sides quivering, and declared, "Y'know...I'll take the runt!"

Thus began his most humiliating, humbling years. From one in the crowd he became a laughingstock, a violator of ancient oaths. "A weak link!" the others called him, again and again. He fell more than he flew, unable to keep up with his mammoth competitors. A year-long Apprenticeship became half a decade as he struggled to overcome barriers of strength, size, and even language.

When he retreated to the barracks, teasing filled his ears until he fell asleep. "A weak link!" became "You're weak, Link!" The name he had before was discarded and forgotten.

But he refused to stop. He overcame the obstacles in his way. Not strong enough? Fight fast and it doesn't matter. Not big enough? Be harder to hit and more clever in your strikes. Can't speak well? Don't speak at all. When he became unbeatable in duels they stopped laughing. With reluctance he was given his blade and his rank. They loosed him upon the world to Seek, thinking it would stop him. But his experiences had hardened him and he returned with a "Charge" of his own, as did his fellows. They were forced to promote him to Senior Knight, giving him a master's blade. He had proved them wrong.

"Charge"
✦✦✦✧✧
Link and Zelda's relationship is...complicated, to put it nicely. They met as Link drove off a ferocious beast that had turned on Zelda as she studied it. Though Zelda only wished, initially, to reward the daring young drake for his acts, Link seemed to take the whole situation in a different light, considering it a sign that his Search was complete and that his Charge had been found. Much confusion and indignation ensued, but Link could not be shaken from his beliefs. After some turbulent days at the very beginning, Zelda has come to tolerate his presence. They travel together now, Link keeping Zelda safe as she studies the wonders of the natural world.
A charismatic raptorik gent that Link encountered on his travels. Once a bard within his tribe but forced into the warrior trade, Kass looked to Link for guidance and training, but found protection instead. Though still rather handy with a blade, Kass has returned to his old haunts. He often plays music around the nightly campfire, wowing any dragon that might take offense at his beastclan heritage. His nomadic lifestyle has lent a number of cultures, styles, and themes to his music; most anyone is impressed by his vast skill and memory. Kt9BXv2.png
