SHRIKE

Eccentric, enthusiastic, and a member of Vulture's band of former train robbers. Shrike was born deep in Ice, and spent most of his life in hostile, rough territory. He is deeply fascinated with anatomy and medical science, and served an important role as the medic for Vulture's crew. Shrike learned medicine in areas where the Hippocratic oath was more of a Hippocratic suggestion, but what he lacks in formal medical training he more than makes up for in enthusiasm, natural curiosity, and a seemingly endless supply of needles. Indeed, he almost sees his job as a doctor as an unintended side effect of working in a field that allows him to satisfy his deep curiosity.

Excitable and cheerful, Shrike never fit in well among other healers. He's a fine doctor, as his friends can attest to, and his sense of empathy and compassion is par for the course when it comes to dragons who specialize in medicine. However, he is very much a field medic, and doesn't worry too much about cosmetic concerns, such as scarring, or even patient comfort as much as he worries about keeping his friends alive at any cost. He finds such things as cosmetic worries to be silly things for a doctor to worry over. His curiosity is insatiable, and if his friends think the collection of manticore hearts he keeps in his freezer is odd, they're willing to overlook it. Shrike is bright and is always dreaming up theories and experiments, thus his creepy collection of body parts. Despite his somewhat morbid personality, he loves animals, especially birds, and keeps quite a few pet doves. He is rarely seen without his favourite, Archimedes. Typically friendly and practical, Shrike is a reliable dragon, and he always has a funny story on hand. He smiles frequently but is slow to laugh (except at his own jokes). He may have become a doctor more by accident than anything else, but Shrike is also fiercely devoted to his friends and can always be counted on to make himself helpful.

Behind the Name...

Shrikes, also known as butcher-birds, are are carnivorous songbirds. They are known for their habit of catching small vertebrates and insects and impaling them on thorns, barbed-wire fences, or any sharp point. They occupy a grisly place in folklore due to this habit, often likened to butchers and executioners.
