Nerium oleander is commonly known as oleander. It stands alone as the only member of the genus Nerium. It is toxic in all of its parts. The latin word Nerium comes from "Neros", the Greek word for water. The word Oleander may be the Latinized form of a Greek compound noun: 'οllyo' (ὀλλύω), which means 'I kill', and the Greek noun for man, 'aner'. Oleander is the official flower of the city of Hiroshima, having been the first to bloom following the atomic bombing of the city in 1945.
