- - - ▢ Personality and Role
Dismal is a pygmy Gaoler. That’s not to say that they’re the runt of the litter, rather they’re so small the average Banescale is bigger than them. Dismal is about the size of a lion, and thus there isn’t much he can do in the Caravan. He’s much to small to pull his weight, but nobody minds having them around. Everyone thinks that he is absolutely adorable. Dismal also doesn't have much of a mane, giving them the appearance of having a neck that’s too long. Their wings, however, are above average given their size, so with the lack of a mane, Dismal is actually able to fly. Their personality matches their pure looks, as Dismal is kind, forgiving, and pure. They are incapable of speech, so they mostly communicate through noises, gestures, and bleps. Dismal’s charming nature and overwhelming positivity has even scored him a Beastclan mate, a Manticore by the name of Dusk. Everyone was a bit wary at first, not really trusting a Beastclan around the most vulnerable of their group, but Dismal managed to convince them that Dusk is as loyal as they come. Dismal loves his boyfriend, and Dusk loves him back. Everyone is in agreement that they are pretty darn cute.

- - - - ▢ History
It’s unsurprising to learn that Dismal didn’t have a mother for long. He was abandoned soon after birth, left to die by a family that knew he couldn’t exactly fend for himself. He was much too small, his mane too patchy and short to combat the elements. Even the noises he made were pitiful, nothing above a few whines and squeaks. So, they left him. Somehow, Dismal didn’t die. Despite Gaolers being wildly unpopular amongst the general dragon population, and Dismal being much too small, they survived alone. They were not weighed down by a mane. Their small size allowed for easy hiding, and even flight when necessary. They were mute and often made no sound at all, and drew no attention to themselves. Their natural Gaoler instincts helped as well, and Dismal was able to smell danger on the horizon and act accordingly. They were discovered by the Gaoler Caravan somewhere in the tame part of the Windswept Plateau. Of course, Dismal was terrified upon first seeing so many of the kind that had abandoned it. They tried to hide, but were quickly found by Fortis. Everyone pretty much unanimously decided that Dismal was “too smol” to leave behind, so they adopted the pygmy Gaoler without giving him much of a in the matter. After a terrifying first few days, Dismal actually grew accustomed to the Caravan rather quickly. If they wished him harm, they would have smelled of sinister intent, not innocent adoration. Dismal met Dusk soon after, and wouldn’t leave the Caravan for all the snuggles in the world (he already gets plenty from Dusk!).

- - - - ▢ Name
Dismal gets his name from the expression that he wore when the Caravan first found him. Big puppy dog eyes and a terrified squeak matched it quite well. Dismal hadn’t really had a name before, and didn’t know much about language as well, but they liked the way it sounded so it stuck. There’s nothing actually “Dismal” about them, they’re a very happy Gaoler. Dusk never had a last name, so even now none of them have a surname. They do have pet names for each other, with Dusk calling Dismal his “cuddly Orchid”, and Dusk’s name being a squeak that sounds like a baby rabbit. Everyone interprets this as Dusk being Dismal’s “lucky bunny”, as Dismal gifted Dusk a lucky rabbit’s foot one time.

▢ Trivia

Dismal is a cat magnet. There are at least five black cats clinging to his coat at all times, six if you count Dusk when he’s acting overprotective.
The bow is an anniversary gift from Dusk. Everyone is pretty sure that they’re going to get dragon-married one day.
Friends with Rosemary, even though she can act a bit odd at times. Likes to listen to her stories, of which there are many. Also friends with her mate, Iro, who has taken Dismal as a charge. Dismal is a bit annoyed that everyone thinks he's something to be protected, but doesn't mind having a guard when the Caravan is dealing with some particularly nasty Horrorbeasts.
Saw Melliferous practicing some magic, and was entranced immediately. Started hanging out together, and now they, Dusk, and Mel go out on "lunch dates" as a trio.
