INFORMATION AND LORE
Crows, particularly Effluvials are better able to resist the prion disease than most. When they do contract the illness, they often have few symptoms beyond some physical changes. Most develop the crumbling protein growths characteristic of the infected. In some Crows, the illness attacks the proteins in their feathers. The altered plumage takes on a paler tone, reminiscent of more typical infectees, and becomes more sparse. Some victims may lose their feathers altogether. Prioncrow feathers are considered worthless in Crow circles, as, even ignoring their strange colouration, they are usually quite brittle, and may be contaminated. While these Crows may appear quite sickly, they have a near normal life expectancy (assuming they aren’t killed by an Enceph or another Crow) and are usually immune to Enceph control, though they almost always lack the aforementioned ability. Their claws often contain a mixture of their original viral strain and prions.
While to most dragons these superficial changes seem fairly benign when compared to the horrific effects the affliction normally causes, to most Crows they are equally as devastating. Having their characteristic appearance replaced with such a sickly visage usually deals a crippling blow to their status within their society. Even their closest friends and family may abandon or mock them, potentially even killing them. Many Prioncrows willingly leave their clans in a self-imposed exile. They have a tendency to form groups with other Prioncrows, who understand their struggles and are immune to their shared disease. These clans are typically reclusive and extremely distrusting of, even hostile to, outsiders, particularly towards other Crow variants.
Not every Prioncrow is the result of infection, however. In rare cases the two subspecies have been known to mate, producing hybrids, known as “inborn Prioncrows”. These hybrids often inherit the abilities of an Enceph, whether their Prion parent was one or not. Their viral strain usually attacks the victim's nervous system, often causing problems with muscle control, unconsciousness and seizures. Prioncrows who possess an Enceph’s desire to infect and control dragons may utilize this neurotoxic strain to incapacitate prion-infected dragons until the disease progresses enough to allow the Crow to assume control of the dragon’s mind. In some cases these hybrids lack the typical growths of a Prion, appearing at least outwardly as an average Jackdaw. Particularly pale individuals have been mistaken for Albino Crows. Depending on how they are raised, inborn Prioncrows may see themselves as the rightful rulers of the Plaguelands, a combination of two great bloodlines. Regardless of their upbringing, they still retain a love for gold and other shinies.
These dragons are often hunted by Encephs, as they are considered a threat. Perhaps not unjustly, as infected individuals have been known to track down and kill the dragon(s) that infected them. Prioncrows are quite respected by some Encephs however, as they are seen as having passed Plaguebringer’s “test”. Some infected take this to heart and choose to willingly remain with an Enceph and their Spongiform thralls. Here they will help their new “flock” spread the pathogenic trial to others, daring them to survive and overcome one of the Wasteland’s most lethal diseases, lest their victims be reduced to a shadow of their former selves. Perhaps one day the Crow’s former clan will face the same test…
