BIOGRAPHY

Moss’s story began in the heart of the Scarred Wasteland. While it was the only home he’d known since his hatching, the domain of the Plaguebringer is by no means a place for a baby dragon. Dangerous creatures lurk around every corner and the very ground is toxic in some areas. Those who don’t know how to tread lightly could meet a nasty demise. As a Snapper, he was especially in danger of getting into trouble and being unable to fly away. Moss’s parents were adamant on keeping him in their den as often as possible, until he was old enough to fend for himself. But he grew tired of staring at the same old walls and smoggy horizon. He dreamed of soft grass beneath his little toes and the sprawling blue sky he’d only heard about in stories.

After many months of prodding and pleading, the little Moss finally convinced his dad to take him on an excursion. Traveling to the edge of their territory, where the Wasteland borders the Viridian Labyrinth, Moss’s father showed him the wonders of the Gladekeeper’s northern realm. The tiny Snapper was immediately in awe. He examined every flower stalk and leaf with great care and reverence, knowing he may not see anything like it again for a long, long time.

As he explored beneath the watchful eye of his father, Moss caught movement from the corner of his eye. What could that be? He turned his head to look and his round eyes stretched wide in wonder. It was a fluttering, gossamer creature, not unlike the moths he was used to seeing back home. Its wings sparkled with stardust at the edges.

“Papa, what is that?” he exclaimed, bouncing over to watch it alight on a flowerhead.

His father narrowed his eyes. “That’s called a butterfly...but I’ve never seen one like this before. It’s so…”

“Sparkly!” cried Moss, finishing his sentence. His shrill voice must have startled the butterfly because it took to the air again moments later. “Wait, no! Don’t go!” He barreled after it, flattening the grass in his wake.

“Moss, get back here!” But Moss was too intent on catching up with the glittering insect that he hardly heard his father’s call. After what seemed like forever, he finally found it, resting in a little clearing surrounded by jewel-like plants.

“There you are,” he breathed and he rushed toward it, stretching out his nose curiously as it opened and closed its delicate wings. Then, all of a sudden, the butterfly flapped its wings hard in Moss’s direction, spewing him with stardust. He jumped back in surprise, sneezing, and the butterfly wheeled off again.

“Hey!” Moss tried to start after the creature once more, but his father came blundering through the undergrowth before he could continue.

“MOSS! You can’t go running off like that!”

“B-but!”

His protests were swiftly cut off. “We’re going home. Now.” His father’s tone made it evident that now was not the time to argue. Giving one last glance after the mysterious butterfly, Moss sighed and turned to plod off the way he’d come.

It wouldn’t become evident for many years still, but ever since that day, Moss’s growth into an adult dragon was halted. It seemed that whatever substance the butterfly had sprinkled him with had made him destined to remain a hatchling forever. It was difficult to come to grips with at first. Moss’s parents became even more overprotective of him while they tried to navigate this new normal. But Moss never stopped dreaming that one day, he would return to the Viridian Labyrinth and walk again through its beautiful grasses and breathe in its mysteries. And that’s exactly what happened.

A strange dragon visited his den one morning, claiming to hail from the Gladeveins and to watch over other dragons like Moss. Hatchlings who never grew up. His name was Anzu and he promised to give the little Snapper a good life, never needing to be shut in like a prisoner, but also ensuring his safety in a world filled with danger. Moss couldn’t be happier in his new verdant home, but he still remembers to make frequent trips out to visit his parents back home when he can.
