If there were ever an accurate definition of “daredevil,” it would only need to be a picture of Belial’s face. From leaping over the edge of Cloudsong before he could properly fly, to grazing the edges of the Twisting Crescendo for fun, he’s been a menace since hatching. Humility isn’t a concept he’s familiar with, either. Though a dragon with a brilliant mind, he’d always felt that the stuffy life of what’s proper was beneath him and much preferred to shirk his responsibilities in search of his next thrill. Bold as he was, though, his hubris eventually became his downfall.

As he grew up, Belial became tired of only ever participating in his favorite pasttime by himself. Sure, it had been fun to rule the playground as a hatchling, but in adulthood, he began to realize that other dragons didn’t care so much about how cool he was. It made him lonely in a way he’d never expected. And then, he met Damon. Elegant, cool, collected. The polished Banescale was everything that Belial wasn’t, and yet, he was enamored with the other dragon in a way he couldn’t describe. It was as if all his previous attempts to garner the praise of others had lost meaning. Damon was the only one he wanted to impress. But it wasn’t going to be easy.

Damon was king of playing hard to get. Always holding out a bone, only to yank it away as soon as Belial trotted after him. It was infuriating, yet intriguing at the same time. They matched each other in energy like the sun did the moon. At first, it seemed that nothing Belial did would ever be enough. All his tricks and daring feats did nothing to pierce the shell around Damon’s heart. Begrudgingly admitting defeat in the end, he asked what he had to do to win him over.

Damon had chuckled, watching Belial from the corner of a half-lidded eye. “Bring me the bell of an Opheodrys Serthis,” he’d crooned. “I’d very much like one to wear. They’re so...shiny.”

Belial had puffed out his chest. “I’ll bring you the shiniest bell you’ve ever seen,” he declared and he set off at once, not hearing the chuckle of disbelief from Damon as he went.

It didn’t take long for Belial to locate the creature’s den. This was going to be easy—just a simple sneaking in and out with the bell. He’d taken on much bigger challenges before.

Or so he thought.

In he went, spotting the bell almost immediately and gripping it between his strong jaws. But as he turned to leave…

“You DARE to ssssteal from me?” An enraged hiss sounded from above and the serthis herself dropped down from above, blocking his exit.

Belial sharpened his claws and prepared to fight, but before he could take a step, the creature was upon him.

“You’ll pay for thissss!” The serthis deftly swiped a scroll from her belt and opened it, inscribed runes facing Belial. The began to glow and Belial felt his body rooted in place. He panicked. He couldn’t move!

A blinding light shot toward him from the scroll and…

He awoke in the serthis’s lair with a mirror and the scroll laying beside him. “Huh?” Groggily, he picked up the mirror and dropped it in fright. He was a hatchling again! The serthis was nowhere in sight.

“W-what??” Belial squeaked. Horrified, he opened the scroll to see that it was the same one that the serthis had used to curse him, with a handwritten note at the bottom.

May you never forget how childish it is to steal that which does not belong to you. And may your fate be sealed.
