mr handy who used to work at a university or something like that? maybe a museum?
some? many? of the people who worked there treated him kindly and more like a coworker than a tool. so he grew in personality like codsworth/curie fairly quickly?
possibly was illegally modded by one of them at some point? has an internal holotape reader + extra memory storage? maybe some of the coworkers survived the bombs, they continued to mod him after? so an extra battery, swapping his arms to things helpful in the postapocalypse. he went out and scavenged and stuff bc radiation immunity
he lived there for quite a while?
Eventually for some reason he ends up travelling. Possibly the people had died and he decided he ought to spread knowledge? Alternatively he didn't choose to leave, there was a raider/etc attack and he ended up stolen during it. Possibly the rust devils?
Is turned into one of the racetrack robots eventually. After rescue by Nora, is the first to show personality? BC he already had one. Takes a while to recall things, probably only survived BC of the extra hardware. Maybe do something with robo PTSD? He's been fully sapient since before the war unlike most if not all of the other robots so he reacts in more humanlike ways to things. Something about the disconnect in how his fellow robots/human settlers expect him to act like and how he does act?
Stays at the castle BC for a while the old old architecture feels more familiar than the pre war stuff, because of his spotty memory? But his database of knowledge is mostly intact
