The egg was buried in a shipment of goods; Greene eventually unearthed it but the merchant claimed no knowledge of it and refused to take it back and then it hatched at Graygarden anyway. So it became theirs, then, I guess, bloody rowdy hatchlings... (they raise plants, not people; frankly it's a miracle that the hatchling didn't eat something poisonous and kick the bucket)

But the hatchling never grew up - and suddenly White's randomly-chosen flower-name of Amaranth seemed a tad prophetic. (Amaranthus, the unfading, the forever-young; guardian spirit of hatchlings, the idealistic, the unlucky -)

Ammy's a friendly and clever child, if a bit scatterbrained at times. Everyone living at Graygarden has a green thumb - be damn hard not to really - and of course Ammy's no exception. He can't do a lot, being a hatchling and also allergic to several types of pollen as it turns out, but he does his best. He has a particularly keen sense for the selective- and cross-breeding of fruit trees, for some reason; Brown grumbles about it but generally follows up on Ammy's hunches nowadays.
