AWAKENING

He wakes to a searing, burning, agonizing fire in his veins. He feels as if his skin is melting off of his body, as if his bones, as they shatter and reform and lengthen and change are stabbing him with tiny shards of red-hot glass with each change. When he opens his eyes, he can see nothing but a blur of red-coated scenery that writhes and pulses grotesquely before his red-tinted, pain-filled eyes. He can feel spikes bursting out from his new, leathery skin, sharp and causing rivulets of ruby blood to slide down his new... Scales? He can't think, can't even breathe as his organs shift and grow to match his new body.

Perhaps the worst of the pain is when twin spheres of pain push hard up against the space right below his shoulders, and thick bone spears through there, pushing up and out and sprouting leathery skin if their own to cover their new muscles and such.

The pain is so great that he blacks out from it.

When he wakes again, he is thankfully pain free and he shifts up onto too-large feet and strong, strange new legs, looking around with eyes no longer tinged red with what was likely blood.

And then, the memories come back to him, rushing and flooding into his overwhelmed mind, causing a whole new type of pain to curl deep inside of him.

She, with the long, lovely blue hair that fell in gentle waves around her soft face and brought out her pale eyes. The way she had smiled so sweetly at him, stroking his face and holding him with such tenderness that it made his entire soul ache for her. The way she had comforted him in his times of fear, of self-loathing and doubt, how she had been his one point of stability in the strange, vicious world they had come from.

How she had left him to the clutches of the demons that had stripped him of any and all emotion, that had tortured and destroyed him from the inside out and turned him into the monster he now was. The way that she had ascended in the arms of another that infuriating man with the hair like fire and eyes like blood. The way she hadn't even given him a second look, hadn't even cared about his desperate cries for mercy, for a savoir. For a reason as to why the Gods had forsaken him so.

And the memories caused a rage so white-hot to well within him that he let out a roar that shook the ground and fleshy trees nearby to shake and shudder in distress. He paid them no mind, of course, too caught up in his fury to notice the way that his voice made the world tremble.

Betrayal sung so thick in his blood that his white eyes glowed a crimson similar to the pattern of his new wings, and he took to the sky, determined to take revenge for his suffering.

She would pay for abandoning him.

THE SHADE

They find him when he sleeps. They speak in a harmony of voices in his mind, all in sync, all smooth as silk and calm as an ocean at night. They whisper to join them, to allow it inside, to allow it to power him. To allow it to spread further with him as a vessel.

They promise him everything in return.

Even in sleep, he can feel the icy tendrils of power sliding tantalizingly close to him, dark and cold and strong.

"We will help you take your revenge." They hiss, their claws slipping in deeper, holding tighter, and he writhes and trembles under their cold yet soothing and almost protective touch. They will not harm him. They cannot. They need him.

He shudders and whines low in his throat as they continue to whisper promises of revenge and retribution and death, all things he had dreamed of, all things that had drawn them to his slumbering form. He struggles knowing somewhere in his unconsciousness that nothing good will come from this, that agreeing will bring him nothing but pain and suffering, will bring on even worse for the others in this realm.

And yet, he cannot refuse.

He shudders out a faint, whispered "Yes."

The Shade swarms his vulnerable form, and he screams.
