Energy Conduit

Back in the Shifting Expanse, Claude made some small, nearly inconsequential errors in judgement. He joined a cult, he was manipulated into transforming his body into a conduit of ultimate power, followed through with the ritual that imbued him--and several other foolishly willing dragons--with what they believed would be ultimate power but turned out to be a critical influx of energy that nearly destroyed all of them, did destroy some of the chosen dragons and the other lesser cult members, and then fled the land he once knew as home. Maybe all of that wouldn't have happened, if things had gone exactly as the cult expected, if Claude hadn't interfered because of a different set of errors in judgement where another group of dragons had flipped him against the cult and he spent weeks before the ritual attempting to discredit them all.

Needless to say, leading up to the final ritual, Claude pretended everything was normal while he worked in secret to undermine all the cult was doing. He never meant to be part of the final ritual. Not only was it incredibly dangerous, even with the changes made to their bodies, but it was ludicrous to think it would actually work, once someone sat down to actually think about it and not just give into the groupthink. In the end, it was probably his presence alone that derailed the entire chain of events.

If it wasn't for his brother, another of the chosen not actually related by blood, but a brother nonetheless, Claude probably would have wound up torn to pieces by the surviving members of the cult. Rot used his personal connections to the Scarred Wasteland to get Claude to safety. Not particularly because he was grateful Claude had destroyed what Rot believed in, but because, during the process of the ritual's cascading failure, Claude became infected with a strangely spiritual energy, making him far more valuable than any of the other surviving cultists.

Ultimately, Claude didn't mean to do it.
