The Councillor meetings are always eventful, but this one was going to take the cake. Knowing Pitch the way I do, I could tell by the way his claws twitched that he was excited. __“So,” he said, starting the meeting, “I have an idea. We haven’t talked to the Lightning dragons about the dispenser idea Shadow had at our last meeting yet, right? Because I just noticed a crucial flaw in that plan.” __“We only took the traces out, Pitch,” Ebony stated. __Pitch let out a sigh of relief. “Thank the deities. Because by asking for those element dispensers, we’re confirming the rumor, which is the last thing we want to do. So today, I want to ask everyone for ideas.” __Dusk scoffed. “How did the rumor even leak anyway? If the three of you were the only ones who knew,” he sneered, eyes narrowed like a snake’s at Murk, Pitch and Silhouette. __“We don’t need to talk about that,” Pitch snapped quickly. Dusk had more to say, but Pitch silenced him with a single glare. “The only relevant information is, the rumor got out, and now it’s in everyone’s heads.” __Pitch’s last few words visibly resonated with Murk, seated right next to me. “In their heads… If the spell didn’t work on Darkbringer… He remembered…” he mumbled. I was sure I was the only one who could hear, yet I had no idea what he was talking about. __“That’s it.” Murk stood up violently. “We have to make them forget. Mess with their minds, so we can ask for the dispensers to protect ourselves without letting them know something.” __Now I was in the hot seat. All the Councillors turned towards me in one synchronous motion. __“Maybe… How about I don’t…” I stammered, but Pitch’s glare was intensifying. __Dusk flew out of his chair and leaned across the table to come nose to nose with me, grinning like a hydrena. “Why not? It’s not like it would harm you in any way. You do nothing for the Council, except sit around and perform your hilariously embarrassing shows. It’s about time for you to pull your weight.” __The whole Council gasped at his outburst. Pitch forced him back down into his chair with his claws. __“I won’t hear another word out of you for the rest of this meeting,” he whispered dangerously. Moving on to me, he added, “And while that was terribly out of line, he is right. You wanted to join the Council, so you get to help out in a time of need. Use your siren powers to wipe their memories of the rumor, or leave the Council forever and be replaced. The choice is yours.” __Silence. Stiffening, smothering silence. I never had any intention to hypnotize the dragons of the clan for Pitch’s benefit because I thought the time would never come where I’d need to. But now, faced with this frightening choice, I couldn’t bear to think about losing my seat on the Council. I had joined to share my voice with the clan, but over time, the attachment to the seat snuck up on me. This seat was about more than performing. So I knew what I had to do. __“Okay. At the next clanwide meeting.” __All of the Councillors let out a sigh of relief. I suppose they didn’t want to be forced out of the room yet again to allow Pitch to speak to me in private. __The meeting concluded. Pitch let us out and I went straight to Radius’s room banging on his door like a blacksmith with a hammer. __Once he opened the door, I shoved him inside and whispered furiously, “The rumor, about the traces of the elements in your hallway. It’s true but it happened before my time and now they want me to erase it from everyone’s mind with my voice at the next meeting, which I don’t even know if I can do, and it just feels so wrong but you’re the only dragon I can talk to about this.” Breath. “Can you help me?” __Radius took a step forward and forced me into some deep breaths. “Everything’s going to be okay. If Pitch wants you to do it, then do it. I don’t see how you can find a way out, but it’ll be okay.” __“Are you sure? I can’t bear the thought of doing that to you, though.” __He stopped and looked around the room. “How about I plug my ears when you sing?” __“That’s perfect. Then I’ll still have you to rely on, because you’ll know everything.” __“Always.” __Then it was the meeting, all too soon. I got ready to sing my song with the help of Radius, and Pitch told me in great detail what I should and shouldn’t say. At the next clanwide meeting, all the flights took their turn to state their grievances, and then Pitch gave me a nod. __I stepped forward. “Councillors, distinguished Ambassadors, members of the clan, thank you for all your support during my last performance. As a thank you, I would like to give you an encore, and I hope to see you at my next concert.” Radius and all the Councillors sneakily put in their earplugs, and Pitch gave me the signal to begin. __I launched into “Under Our Spell” again. Pitch hated it when I sang for the concert, but he was ecstatic at the thought of using it to wipe their memories of the rumor. As I let out the melody, I focused on the words and on making them forget everything we couldn’t let them know. When I was done, I felt a pang of guilt at the morality of taking their memories away, but Pitch wouldn’t let me wallow for long. __“Thank you for gracing us with that performance. Thank you everyone for coming to the meeting, and have a good day.” __To me, he added quietly, “I know that was hard, but I’m glad you were dedicated enough to this clan and to the Council to do this. Maybe you won’t be such a disappointment after all.”

EXTENDED LORE My day always began the same way. I got up and tried to convince a dragon near me, usually an Ambassador, to bring me some breakfast. It usually works, but this time, as Fitz came in with a tray of rabbit meat, prepared exactly the way I like, Pitch came into the room and forced me to send him away. __“You weren’t given the power you have to get free room service out of our respected Ambassadors. I expect better of you.” __Which was quite the thing to say to your own mother, but I bit my tongue, sensing that I was already on thin ice. __I had a weekly show later. Tonight was going to be one of my best performances, I could feel it. __Fast forward to the show. I don’t usually get that big of a turnout. The Councillors go out of obligation, and I have very few actual fans, so I always convince a few to tell their friends to come. But today, I had nearly a full house, without having to do anything. __Although, some of them were probably there for Radius, my opening act. He writes a lot of my songs, but he’s not a bad singer himself, and when he performs, he always dedicates a song to someone in the Fortress. But he’s also one of my best friends, and the only one other than Pitch who knew my secret. __Anyway, he captivated his audience with a song that he dedicated to Tempo. After that, he gave the audience a big smile, and said, “Thank you so much, everyone. Next, I’d like to introduce the real star of the show, Raven!” __It was time. As I walked out, I got a huge round of applause, the biggest I had ever gotten. Something felt magical about today. __“Hello! Thank you all for coming here tonight. I promise to deliver an amazing show.” __Another round of applause. But hidden beneath the layers of clapping, I heard a snicker, and I froze for a second. __But I could do this. I started my first song, a strong melody with an upbeat rhythm. Radius joined me in the background with various instruments. __I regained my confidence slowly. Even some of the Councillors were smiling and slightly dancing along to the upbeat songs, and looking sad at some of the emotional songs. __In the days leading up to the performance, Radius was trying to convince me to sing a risky song. He suggested it, I liked it, but if I sang it… __I finally decided to, minutes before the show. It was my grand finale, called “Under Our Spell.” Like all my songs, I sang it with feeling, but this one was special to me. It was the closest I could come to revealing everything. __And when I was finished, I got the applause I wanted. But amidst it all, there was a cold, cruel laugh. I don’t know who did it, but there was immediately an influx of whispers. I laughed uncomfortably. __“Thank you for coming, everyone. It’s been a real treat to perform for you all.” __As they filed out, Pitch stormed up to me. “What in the world do you think you’re doing?” __“Performing.” __“Obviously. But look, you can’t just sing lyrics like, ‘you didn’t know that you fell, now that you’re under our spell,’ or ‘captured in the web of my song.’ Are you an idiot?” __I knew it was a risk. Still, I said calmly, “It’s not like anyone will take those lyrics seriously, Pitch, it’s just a concert.” Leaving him fuming, I retreated into the wings of the stage. | ___ |
