Biography
■
mahavi justice of honor |
Often, there is no personal satisfaction in becoming a Justice of the Order Radiant. Had Mahavi known this before accepting the title, he might have still continued on the same path. He certainly, though, would have given it deeper consideration.
But he is the Justice of Honor, not the Justice of Foresight, and like nearly every other individual in Sornieth, he finds hindsight to be a much clearer thing.
When he became the Justice of Honor, it was on account of his steadfast nature, and his ability to see into the hearts of his fellows, to observe their truest selves. There is no particular magic to it, and to tell the truth, Mahavi is more of a scribe than a paladin or even a sage. His intellect and patience are of far greater value than any prowess he can offer in combat, though he has honed those skills to an acceptable degree since becoming a Justice.
And it was these traits that led him to proof of a young paladin's innocence. Against all odds, against every other voice in the Luminaries, Mahavi trusted a paladin under scrutiny for the murder of a sage. It was not a choice made on a whim, but concrete faith in a dragon who would never bring harm to one of their own, even if they bore a grudge for matters long past.
It was Mahavi who proved that the sage's demise was the product of dark machinations, the kind that were the hallmark of Shade-infested dragons, or even other creatures with some degree of intelligence and malevolence alike. To this day, the murderer remains free, but the paladin in question leads their own small troop directly beneath the supervision of the Order Radiant's most venerated Justices.
Mahavi misses them, from time to time. Not the stress they shared, frantically searching for incontrovertible proof of innocence, but the nights afterward. The history lessons traded for training with sword and spear, the meals taken together after strenuous meetings. It was a meaningful connection, a rare one indeed for a lonely Justice.
He wishes he could have something of the like again.
The Order Radiant insists that Araila, Justice of Valor, will provide such a thing. By their estimations, her bold nature will make a fine complement to Mahavi's studious one. More importantly, they will produce children likely to bring further honor and success to the Order Radiant, children who could one day become full-fledged Justices themselves.
Except there is no spark between Mahavi and Araila, not even the faintest one. She cooperates with him in matters of state, but behind closed doors, they are little more than strangers. They take their meals separately, nest separately, even conduct training and research separately. United they may be in the strengthening the Luminaries and acting in the name of the Mother, but it is a formal relationship at the very best, and a union slated for decay at a likely worse.
More than once, Mahavi has considered alerting the Order Radiant to the state of affairs in the Luminaries, but ultimately, prudence has won out. He risks reassignment, either for himself or Araila, not to mention the disappointment of the very Justices who trusted them with an entire branch of the Order. So long as they do not attract anything other than praise from the Order Radiant, they can continue to do their work interrupted, with or without a relationship. With or without children.
Some nights, Mahavi has wondered what he might be like as a father, what his duties as Justice might offer future children. But he always comes to the same conclusion: a Justice cannot be there for their Scions, no matter the blood they share. The Order will always come first.
He swore an oath to that effect many years ago, but this is the only instance when it brings him despondence rather than courage.
