Biography
■
tajana keeper of the irons |
When Tajana was sworn in as the Keeper of the Irons, she knew would never see her home again. It was a conscious sacrifice, as are most sacrifices made to the Order Radiant, but a painful one nonetheless. In the Ashfall Waste, Tajana had family, friends, a future filled with brimstone and steel.
Here, among the Luminaries, most of those things are gone.
It is true that she has made new friends. Though she may be the Luminaries' warden, responsible for imprisoning any atrocities the Order Radiant may find nearby, she still finds herself in regular contact with the other residents of Isle Helidoros. Ephre in particular has become a steadfast conversation partner, always minding the torches throughout the monastery. He is the source of light in the dungeons, and quite the master of riddles, though occasionally over-ambitious. Tajana likes him quite a lot for someone she sees only a few moments each day.
And in some ways, the Luminaries are like family. They defend one another from threats, from slander, almost without condition. The trust that takes, especially between dragons who still remember the days when they were strangers to one another, is staggering. Tajana witnesses it whenever the sages ask after her health, always attentive to the flowers blooming through her fur. They flake away like rust when Tajana stretches herself too thin, and despite her valiant attempts to hide it, the sages always know. Rather than taking advantage of that, though, they always care.
Back home, those flowers were a sign of weakness, carefully disguised among the shavings of repurposed metals. Tajana's peers would have named her weak, even unreliable, and she would not have been able to enjoy a career as a smith for very long.
Would it have been for the best, though? True, becoming the Keeper of the Irons has given her the keys to jail and judgment alike. It has allowed her to spend her spare hours in the Heliodoros forge, crafting new tools for her trade and new weapons for her fellows. But she cannot help but wonder what like may have held for her if she was half the smith she is, half the stalwart force of nature.
Maybe she would wander Sornieth, always searching for some proof that she is not weak or fated to fade away. It would be a harsh life, certainly, but it would also be one unchained to any one place or ideal.
What is the use in wondering, though? Tajana is shackled to her role as Keeper of the Irons, sure as the sun rises each dawn. And that was her sacrifice to make.
