The bell over the diner door jingled as Phantasmagorie pushed his way in. Fairyfloss, the waitress, made her way over to him as he stepped up to the counter.
"What can I get for you Phaz?" she asked, flipping open her notepad and taking a pencil out from behind her horn. "Your usual latte?"

"A-actually," he stammered, looking at the ground "I was wondering-- you see, Harlequin just brought over a box of ancient stone reliefs that they unearthed-- digging under the mountain, you know-- and I need to take them upstairs at the museum to catalog but they're very heavy a-and I was just wondering--" He took a deep breath and raised his head to gaze past Fairyfloss's shoulder, at the handsome young banescale in an apron, up to his first wing-joint in dishwater in the back of the kitchen. "I was wondering if Magnet could come help me move them."

The banescale froze, nearly dropping the stack of plates he was cradling in the wrists of his wings. The light green coatl cooking at the sizzling grill paused mid-burger flip and shot Phantasmagorie a look. Besides being the diner's cook and owner, Laurentine was also the adoptive father of Magnet. Phantasmagorie blushed and looked away under the coatl's sharp, scrutinizing gaze. After an agonizing silence, Laurentine finally spoke: " The lunch rush isn't for a couple more hours. If Magnet wants to help, he may."

With a happy whoop the banescale took off his apron and rushed around the end of the counter. Phantasmagorie felt his heart swell. The minutes he spent in Magnet's company were the happiest of his young life; now if only he could get up the courage to confess his feelings.
