The Infernal Tree

Fire creates and destroys. When it rages through a forest, it leaves behind charred husks, but the intense heat also gives some plants the strength they need to flourish. "Rising from the ashes," many people say, and they often do so with a smile and a sigh of relief.

But not everything that rises from the ashes is meant to be admired.

Forest-dwelling clans speak of a strange tree that is seen every now and then. It appears in the wake of wildfires, rising tall and strong amidst the ash. Its leaves are glossy green, its fruits startlingly red. It is a riot of color against the ashen landscape.

Perhaps that is why travelers feel compelled to approach it — despite the stories they've heard, despite the sour scent of its leaves. And despite the heat that, even days after the blaze has died out, still radiates from its core.

"Come," it seems to whisper. "Step closer. Take a bite..."

For many who take a bite of its gleaming ruby fruits, there is no hope of rescue: Too often, by the time they are found, life has already left them, and they lie stiffening among the twisted roots.

The lucky few who escape may not wake for several days — and once they do, they are never again the same. They speak, invariably, of nightmares of suffocating darkness, of heat so unbearable, it crushes them like a vice.

But worst of all, they say, are the noises just on the edge of hearing. "I'm glad I couldn't see them. It was horrible, so horrible....I heard the sound of something burning. And then...I heard the screams."

Dragons who are prudent and wise will then go to remove this tree, lest it claim more of their clanmates. But the tree must not be cut down, for such insidiousness cannot be allowed to bleed into the soil, where it will poison the earth, the crops. These wastelands take a long time to heal, and even decades after are likely to spawn cruel and capricious curses.

No, this being sprang from fire, and to fire it must return. There is no harm in watching it burn, for as it is being consumed, it can do no more damage. But those who lean too closely towards the crackling flames may hear a sibilant whisper...

"I will rise again."
