Looking to minimize your carbon foot print?

On a mission to become more environmentally conscious, I've been trying to reduce the number of products I use that end up in the landfill. Here are some of the things I've changed....
uDX4JcV.png Every tooth brush you use goes into the landfill! Most dentists will recommend replacing your toothbrush every 6 months. For the average adult that would be more than 150 toothbrushes in their lifetime! Consider using a bamboo toothbrush instead! Bamboo is sustainable and compostable, so when it's time for a new brush, you can toss your old one in the compost bin! Most bamboo toothbrushes available right now are unfortunately not made with bristles that are compostable, so you'll need to remove these first.
Every tube of toothpaste that you use goes into the landfill too! Burt's Bees has started making recyclable toothpaste tubes, but even better are products like toothpaste tablets! There are many companies that make toothpaste tablets that you chew into a paste and then use to brush your teeth. A lot of these come in compostable packaging too. Most of these products aren't available with fluoride; the next best alternative is probably nano-hydroxyapatite, although there isn't quite as much data to support this as there is flouride. I have enjoyed using Hüppy toothpaste tablets & love that their packaging is compostable. gwqSk2V.png
yywznBA.png Soaps of all types are a lot more wasteful than you think! Sure the containers they come in are often recyclable (but not always), but why purchase them in that container over and over again? Plus, the water that is added to most soap products increases the amount of packaging required and increases the carbon foot print of these products by increasing shipping costs, its a double-whammy! Fear not, there are a variety of solutions!
  • Laundry detergents can be bought in a variety of forms:
    • Detergents pods (not like your everyday brands (think tide, gain, etc)) can be purchased from brands like Drops and other companies. Why Drops instead of Tide? The packaging of products like drops is a big reason, they don't come in a large plastic bin, it comes in a cardboard box that is much easier to recycle, both for you and for your local recycling company. These are much more concentrated forms of detergent that use less water
    • Better yet, there are companies that make detergents into sheets! No water at all, so the effort to ship these products is even lower. We use Sheets Laundry Club, partly because the cost was much lower than other similar products.
  • Instead of liquid shampoos/body washes, consider a bar form instead! If washing with a bar isn't your thing, Ethique makes concentrates of not only shampoos and body washes, but they also make concentrates of just about every liquid soap you'll find around the house. BONUS: Ethique also makes plastic free deoderant that actually works. Plus, not only is it eco friendly, it's better than your typical anti-perspirant.
    Ethique is one of my favorite companies for other reasons too; all of the packaging is compostable! So, unrwap, dissolve (if applicable) and toss the packaging into your composter!
