She/Her - Pan Ace

tumblr_inline_nl9cnutn5W1qb2yyz.png

The anathema was born

A chilly summer day in the Southern Icefield, a baby Gaoler
hatched. The warm fluff of her mother enveloped her, and
she snuggled as close to her as she could. It is peaceful

Her first few days of life all she knew was her mother. She didn't
need or want anything else. She was happy.

- - -

This order of Gaolers believe those born outside of the winter
season are weaker and more susceptible to the cold. One of
this order's fundamental laws is don't harbor offspring out of
season. Any Gaoler found to have nested will be charged and
their child(ren) will be considered invalid.

This hasn't happened for decades, until that fateful
Summer day.

The day she hatched.

- - -

It wasn't long before they were found. The peaceful quiet was
disrupted by loud scary sounds. The young Gaoler had to watch
as her mom was bound in chains and dragged away.

"Mama!" she managed, but before she could do or say anything
else, she was struck by the back of someone's paw.

She was out cold.

Cold.. so cold. The little Gaolers' eyes tore open, her head was
pounding. She could hear voices, but the pounding in her head
made them sound distorted. The room she was in was dark, lit
up slightly by the sconces hung haphazardly against the cave
walls. The floor was slick and freezing against her little body.
Another look around and she found her mother, chained up
and across the room.

She quickly attempted to stand, only to be met with failure.
She fell back down against the floor with a thud. Now was when
she realized she was chained as well.

"Mama!" she cried as loud as her little voice could manage. All
the voices stopped and one by one a pair of unforgiving eyes
found it's way to her.

"And that- thing- there is the problem!" A voice spoke up.

"It was born out of season, can it even be considered valid?"

"Put it in the dungeons. We'll deal with the dam later"

The little Gaoler would never see her mother again.

- - -

They called her Anathema. She didn't understand at first, but it
didn't take long for her to figure it out.

A frail thing she's become, she doesn't get much but whatever
leftovers the order leaves her. Most of the time she gets nothing,
the order not wanting to waste their limited resources on an invalid.

Most days she gets lost in her head. Thinking of her mom,
fantasizing of the day she comes and rescues her from this prison.

"Will she ever come rescue me?"

" 'Yer talkin' to 'yerself again invalid." A voice spoke up.

Anathema snapped out of her daze and looked up. It was the
Dripcave Deputy assigned to her

Most days he was her only company, her contact with her own
kind was very limited. The order above seldom wasted their time
checking on her.

So he was all she had.

He was annoying.

"..Do you know what happened to her?" She rarely spoke to him,
but she's been avoiding the question for so long. She needed to
know.

"Hmmm?" he looked at her, and poked his head through the
bars of her cell. A pointy toothed smirk peeking through the gaps
in his helmet.

"I 'eard they cut 'er 'ead off"

Anathemas ears flattened against her head.

She turned away.

The Dripcave Deputy raised his brow at her, and pulled his head
out. Ugh, she was so boring. Why'd he have to get assigned to just
some invalid? He wanted to guard the shade infected creatures.

He left to speak with the order, and Anathema was alone again.

- - -

Days or maybe months have passed. Everyday was the same.

Until today.

The sound of paws against ice shook the floor above Anathema's cell.
She whimpered, she wanted to know what was going on.

Suddenly, the Dripcave Deputy hobbled over to her cell, a frazzled look
on his face and a collar and chain in his claws.

"What's happening!?" Ananthema shrieked out.

"Shade beasts!! They've escaped, th' order is leavin' to someplace safe!
so we need to go, now!"

He hopped up and unlocked her cell with the flick of a claw. He latched
the collar around her neck and pulled her along.

- - -

The wind was harsh outside, a blizzard in the middle of the night.

"We 'ave to get with the order!" He cried, tugging Anathema along.
She could only keep up for so long though, and soon her legs gave
out completely. She was exhausted.

The Dripcave Deputy let out a exasperated sound.

"No! don't stop! We won't make it out 'ere!"

His eyes were filled with panic, a look of desperation stamped on his face.

He attempted to lift Anathema up himself, but she wasn't strong enough.

And neither was he.

She looked up at him, apology clouding her eyes. he looked back down
at her, and his ears flattened against his head.

"Alright, we can rest t'night."

- - -

A warm feeling on Anathemas fur woke her up. She hasn't felt warmth
in a good while. She slowly stretched, and shook the snow off of her fur.
She then remembered last night, and where she was. She got up with a
start, her keeper was nowhere to be seen. She started to panic. What was
she supposed to do? She couldn't take care of her herself.

Amidst her panic, her ears perked up at the sound of pawsteps slowly
approaching. These certain steps sounded like they were.. struggling?
She kept her guard up.

And instantly dropped it when she saw her keeper trudging along. Phew.
But why was he walking like that? Oh, he's carrying a rabbit. Kinda a bit
big for him to eat by himself.

He finally made it, and dropped the rabbit at her paws before collapsing
into the snow himself.

"You...eat..."

Anathema didn't need to be told twice.

For the first time in.. a long time, she felt energized.

The two of them walked side by side, her keeper keeping a steady, but
gentle grip on her chain. She side eyed him, she never took him to be
the caring type. Maybe he just didn't want her to collapse again. she'd
have to wait and see.

Anathema would come to find that that rabbit would be the first of many.

- - -

Anathema and her keeper had been walking for days now, trying to find the
order.

Anathema glanced at him, he was a few paces ahead of her. He had a firm
grip on her chain. He was unusually quiet today, an anxious aura radiating
off of him. Perhaps it was because they've had no luck locating the order.

"They didn't tell you where they were relocating too?" Anathema suddenly
asked. She had grown more confident in the passing days. Her keepers ears
perked up at her question, but let out a quiet mumble under his breath instead
of an answer. Anathema's brows furrowed.

"Uh.. hello?" She said, taking a few steps so she could be in front and
face him. He averted his gaze from her, and she cocked her head.

"We've been walking for days. Do you even know where you're go-"

"No!" He suddenly snapped, Anathema froze in shock at his sudden shout.

He looked up at her and sighed, an apologetic look in his eyes.

"I had the full intention of bringin' you back but.. I can't."

Anathema's eyes widened. "Wh-what?"

"They didn't even tell me where they were goin'. And even if we did find 'em
they'd jus' lock ya' up again. I can't have that, Ana, I'm sorry."

A feeling of relief creeped up Anathema's chest. It crawled all the way up into
her eyes, making them sting.

Her keepers shoulders slumped, and he avoided looking her in the eyes when
he continued,

"They neva' took me seriously either. So.. what's the point of goin' back to 'em."

Anathema smiled.

"It's beautiful out here" She closed her eyes and took in a breath before continuing.

"I may still be chained now, but I've never felt more free."

He felt a twinge in his chest. Something he wasn't used too, well up until a few days
ago. He looked back up at Anathema, a small smile could be seen through the gaps
of this helmet.

"We've done alright on our own right?" Anathema spoke again, and he nodded.

"Then, we don't need the order."

- - -

A good month of traveling, and they finally made it to an icy beachside
of the Southern Icefields.

Anathema watched as a group of Longnecks prepped a raft,
tomorrow at dawn they would be leaving for the Windswept Plateau.

Anathema never thought it'd come to this.

She switched her gaze over to her keeper, he was preparing a fire.
The sun was setting and it was starting to get chilly.

The two of them chatted near the fire until the moon was high in the sky;
when suddenly, her keeper removed his helmet and held it firmly in his paws.

"Trost" He said.

"Hm?" Anathema questioned

"My name, that's my name"

Anathema's eyes widened. She never thought he'd tell her that.

"That's a nice name, it suits you"

He shrugged.

"Why did you tell me?" Anathema tilted her head.

"Well," Trost started, "I 'spose it's 'cause we won't be tied down to
the rules we were assigned when we were born. I wont be yer keeper
anymore, I'll jus' be me. 'An you won't be an invalid anymore. You'll
jus' be.. you"

"Oh-" he stood up, "Speakin' of, you won't be needin' this anymore"

He walked in front of her, and unlocked her chain with his claw. Ananthema
grinned, and pounced on top of Trost

" 'Oi, get off 'a me you o'ergrown dog!"

He managed. Anathema laughed and rolled off of him. Despite being so small,
she wasn't frail anymore. Now she's become round and fluffy.

She hasn't grown much though, physically or mentally. Perhaps the years of
being malnourished and neglected took a toll on the young dragon. She
doesn't seem particularly bothered though.

Anathema and Trost looked at each other, the dim glow of fire reflecting in
their eyes. At that moment, they both knew everything was going to be okay.

- - -

The two of them travelled for.. a long time. Eventually, they made it to
a warm place. The air was clear and little orbs of light danced in the sky.

Anathema and Trost exchanged a glance. A warm feeling trickling into
their chests.

They had finally found sanctuary.

A place they could call home.

- - -

The two of them can be found in a particularly shady corner of the
Mirrorlight Promenade; now, you'll find many dragons who have made
sanctuary here. The past being nothing more than just mere memories.

Perhaps they're drawn to the little Gaoler and the Dripcave Deputy, who
despite everything, made it and found happiness.

It is safe.
