Memento mori (Latin: "remember that you have to die") is the medieval Latin Christian theory and practice of reflection on mortality, especially as a means of considering the vanity of earthly life and the transient nature of all earthly goods and pursuits.

Memento mori has been an important part of ascetic disciplines as a means of perfecting the character by cultivating detachment and other virtues, and by turning the attention towards the immortality of the soul and the afterlife.

This curse would be traced down his lineage. All Vigil's children were destined to die, like any dragon. But they would be given a second chance. It was up to the children if they would accept the bargain.

When Philo’s brothers cracked their eggshells, his remained intact. His parents, worried something might be wrong, gently broke the shell but it soon became obvious that their third son had died some time ago. His wings were stunted little things, his wrinkled skin was far too big for his tiny crippled body. He had never drawn breath, never opened his eyes. Philo was stillborn. And yet, the curse his mother’s bloodline bore was so strong, it even reanimated this maimed, crippled body.

When Philo opened his eyes and drew a rattling breath, his parents were shocked and overjoyed. Philo himself stared up at them with dull, blank eyes. It soon became clear that Philo was different from his two brothers. Not only physically, but also mentally. His body never recovered fully from its premature condition, his muscles remained weak, his stature slim and his eyes never lost their harrowed look. He never played with other hatchlings like his brothers, hardly showed any affection towards his parents, he never laughed and never cried. Other dragons soon started to avoid him, alienated by his emotional detachment. The eerie spirit looming at his side did the rest.

And yet, Philo loves his parents and his brothers. He just can’t show it. He doesn’t know how to laugh or how to cry. When his older brother died, and came back changed beyond recognition, cold and detached, Philo was as heartbroken as his parents. A tempest of emotions raged deep within him, anger, relief, grief, fury and sorrow. But he remained silent, seemingly unmoved.

After his brother Thanatos took up his duty at The Rift, Philo secluded himself even more. To his father’s disappointment, he chose not to follow the path of the warrior. Instead, he chose to dedicate himself to the dead and their memory. He has become an accomplished chronicler, determined to preserve their stories and make sure they are not forgotten.

shadowv4.png Information

Name // Philo

Role// Chronicler (Mourner)
Philo has chosen to become a chronicler. He preserves the memory of those who are gone. Those who recently passed through the veil but also those whose bodies have long crumbled to dust. He especially cares for those, who have long been forgotten. Because he will not forget, he will not let them fall into oblivion. Instead he will make sure their memory will live on forever.

Personality/Background //
Philo seems cold and detached, but despite his cool demeanor he does care for his family very much. Other dragons tend to stay away from him, most fear him because of the unnatural circumstances of his “birth”. They do however acknowledge his efforts to preserve and chronicle the memories of those who have passed away. Especially the historians are interested in the life of dragons who perished long ago.

Familiar //
Philo doesn’t remember a time without his ghostly companion. Unlike others though, the spirit never talks. Not even to Philo. He just follows him around, an eerie silent shadow.
