Memento mori (Latin: "remember that you have to die") is the medieval Latin Christian theory and practice of reflection on mortality, especially as a means of considering the vanity of earthly life and the transient nature of all earthly goods and pursuits.

Memento mori has been an important part of ascetic disciplines as a means of perfecting the character by cultivating detachment and other virtues, and by turning the attention towards the immortality of the soul and the afterlife.

This curse would be traced down his lineage. All Vigil's children were destined to die, like any dragon. But they would be given a second chance. It was up to the children if they would accept the bargain.

…Water filled her lungs, choking her, suffocating her. Phaedra desperately tried to get to the surface, but her pearl pulled her down. She tried to scream for help, but only more water rushed into her mouth. No sound came out of it, only a stream of small bubbles. Phaedra watched them ascending to the surface. Her movements became weaker, and her sight became blurred…
…Strong hands grabbed her, pulling her upwards and out of the water. Phaedra coughed and retched, her lungs were burning. A wizened old dragoness stared down at her. Phaedra knew her. They called her the Swamp Witch…
…”It is not your time yet, child. You need to learn, grow strong because the task you have been given is arduous. A grim fate awaits you, little dragon. And though drowning will be your death, it is not quite time for you to die yet.”
“If I die, I will fulfill my true destiny, witch. I have no fear of death.” Phaedra said defiantly. The witch smiled sadly. “You don’t fear death because you have nothing to lose yet my dear child. You don’t know what your family’s curse will cost you. I hope you are unburdened by life’s hardships for many years to come. But I fear fate will catch up with you sooner than you think…”…

Phaedra awoke with a gasp. The memory of the dream was fading, but she knew it was more than that. More than a dream. Her unconscious mind circled around those early childhood memories like a vulture circled around carrion. Why were those memories haunting her now? She knew there was an explanation but she refused to accept it. Her time wasn’t up. Her life wasn’t over yet. It couldn’t be. She was still young. And unlike her younger self, she was well aware of what she was going to lose if she took the path of her ancestors. Her true destiny, as some of her family would say. Yet she wasn’t prepared to go down that road. There was so much more she wanted to do, so much more she wanted to learn, so many locations she longed to see. Anyways, there wasn’t any bigger body of water anywhere near her. At least not deep enough for an adult dragon to drown in. She had eventually taken the old swamp witch’s prophecy to heart and avoided being close to water. Phaedra had even refused to take on a familiar, fearing it would tie her closer to her fate. She was in no danger, yet a feeling of unease had taken hold of her and she was unable to shake it off. Sighing softly, Phaedra turned around on the blanket she was lying on and tried to go back to sleep.

The next morning, Phaedra felt like she hadn’t slept at all. Cursing softly under her breath, she wiped away the hot tea she had just spilled over her feet. Why had she agreed to take on this assignment? She was a warrior, not a messenger. Nature clans were almost always dwelling in some reclusive location in the middle of nowhere surrounded by hostile plant and animal life. As a dragon born into a nature Clan herself, Phaedra should have known better. Yet when the frail old Guardian asked her to deliver a message, she said yes without even thinking twice. Unwittingly her fingers closed around a small delicate carving made from obsidian and moonstone that hung around her neck now. It depicted a wolf hunting the moon. As a child, the tale of Hati and Sköll had been her favorite. The necklace was a token of appreciation rather than payment for her service. And yet she cherished it more than gold or gemstones. After gulping down a sparse breakfast she packed up her things and moved on. She wanted this to be over quickly. Maybe if she delivered the message and left these ancient woods that reminded her of her childhood home, the shadows that clouded her dreams would also go away. She could travel to Dragonhome, or perhaps the Shifting Expanse. For there is no water in a desert. Phaedra thought and smiled.

…”You will not be able to ignore me much longer…” A whisper in the dark. Phaedra shuddered. Around her was only darkness. It was cold. Somethings warm brushed against her thighs, comforting and reassuring. “Where am I?” she asked, her voice echoed like she was in a cave. But she couldn’t be. Was this another dream? “Wrong question, my dearest.” The voice whispered softly in the dark. “You know where you are, but you refuse to accept what you are. You cannot escape your fate, Gatekeeper. The Blood Moon will be rising soon, you are needed.” Phaedra whirled around, trying to locate the being that was speaking to her. “Needed?” she asked. “Needed for what? I don’t understand…”
“Oh, but I think you do. It is in your blood, Phaedra. A power you will soon learn to control. Don’t be afraid. I’ll come for you soon.”…Phaedra turned around and ran…

Phaedra awoke with a scream, her heart raced like she had just been running for her life. Maybe she had. Faint memories of a dream were etched into her mind. She raised a hand to her sweaty face, touching it to make sure this was real. What was happening to her? She looked skywards to the moon that was looming above her. It was almost full. Unwilling to linger any longer, she packed her things together to move on. She could see well in the dark, and she was rather reluctant to go back to sleep. So why wait for the morning.
The forest was quiet and serene. No insects were chirping, no nocturnal creatures were scuttering around. The silence was odd. As if something had scared away all living beings. You are being foolish and overreacting she firmly told herself. There is nothing wrong or suspicious here. She flinched as a branch cracked behind her. Whirling around, she grabbed her staff but before her grip tightened around the weapon, a sharp pain erupted in her chest. She stared in disbelief at the arrow embedded deeply in her skin. A second one followed swiftly, and then a third. It happened so fast, all she could do was stare at the beautiful owl feathers adorning the shafts. Blood filled her lungs, choking her. The pain was excruciating. As she fell to the ground, she heard hissing noises, voices in the dark that were mocking her. She saw a Serthis slithering towards her, his teeth bared. As she desperately gasped for air, he bended over her and grabbed the arrow shafts. When he ripped them out of her chest, she screamed in pain but only a gurgling noise could be heard. Slowly, her vision faded to black and the pain subsided…

…Phaedra felt a cold wet nose nudging her paws. She tried to ignore it, but the creature was persistent. “Leave me alone!” she murmured. She opened her eyes in shock when a familiar voice answered. “I’m so sorry my dear but you have work to do. You need to come back with me. Please, Phaedra. If you stay here any longer, I won’t be able to help you to come back.” Phaedra stared into bright blue eyes that seemed to be made out of starlight. They were gleaming in the dark. As she tried to focus on the creature before her, its blurry silhouette became more distinct. “That’s impossible…” she whispered. The huge wolf smiled, his eyes still fixed on her. “You should…you can’t be…it’s a myth…impossible…” she stammered. “As impossible as coming back from the dead?” he said softly. “Now, will you come with me?” he asked urgently. Phaedra swallowed hard. If she just stayed here (wherever that was) and ignored the wolf she could go back to sleep, sink into nothingness, forget and be forgotten. But if she went back, there would be a price to pay. She’d be changed, because no one touched by death came back unscathed. What would she be? Who would she be? Would she still be herself? The wolf nudged her impatiently. Phaedra sighed. “Take me back then, Hati. I hope you know the way.” The great wolf howled triumphantly, a sound that made Phaedra shudder. She hoped she’d made the right decision…

The first breath of air was so painful she almost stopped breathing again. Phaedra retched uncontrollably, her mouth was full of congealed blood. It tasted foul and disgusting. She struggled to get onto her feet again, but her muscles didn’t obey her. A piercing cold had gotten hold of her body and she shivered. From out of nowhere the huge wolf appeared. He gave her a look of commiseration and huddled against her shivering body. The warmth comforted her and seemed to ease her pain. Her shallow breathing became stronger, more regular. She had done it. She was back.

naturev4.png Information

Name // Phaedra

Role// Exorcist (Gatekeeper)
Phaedra is an accomplished and powerful exorcist, though her familiar refers to her as a Gatekeeper. She is very sensitive to the supernatural, and her knowledge about ghosts, spirits and poltergeists is unrivaled in the Sanctuary. Whenever there is trouble with a supernatural being, Phaedra is consulted and usually involved in banishing or exorcising the ghost. Since she is also a skilled warrior, she has become a valued addition to the clan.

Personality/Background //
Phaedra is reclusive and likes to keep to herself. She doesn’t know if she has become this way, or if she was already a loner in her previous life. Her memory is fragmented, shattered into bits and pieces. But whoever she was in her past life, whatever her dreams and ambitions were, they belong to a dead dragon. She is Phaedra, the Exorcist now, and she strives for mastery. Her determination helps her to learn and get better with every exorcism she performs. But she also has a softer side, always trying to help ghosts who suffer yet do not harm the living.

Familiar //
Phaedra didn’t take on a familiar in her previous life, or maybe she intuitively felt that the place by her side had always been taken. It was never free. The great wolf Hati chose her because he sensed her power. Phaedra was destined to become a Gatekeeper, so Hati decided to watch over her. Is he really the ravenous beast from the fairy tale, seeking to devour the moon herself? Hati only smiles mischievously when asked that question. Though he never speaks to anyone except Phaedra, everybody senses that the wolf is no ordinary animal.
