Prince of the Ashes

"Well, the bad news is that the demon is, yes, very angry..."

The Shattered Plains are a hard place. A strange place. The desert is vast, its people far-flung and myriad, with noble lineages more ancient than the rock upon which their keeps are built. In that place, there is a valley whose soil is parched and acrid, where the dead have lain so thick that the ground beneath one's feet is more their dust than mineral sediment. But there was no great tragedy here, no terrible destroyer- only the passage of time. Here lie the remains of a ruinous, ill-favored house, its patrons and servants long fled. In the cradle of the valley, a massive stone mesa rears skyward. Atop it sits an impossible structure of twisted black rock, as though the earth had been heated to melting point before being tortured into its final shape. This dizzying amalgam of minarets and spires is riddled with innumerable apertures, like a log devoured by termites: these are the thousand eyes of the Hellgate, Iskander's ancestral home.
